Your wife shouldn’t have told you how much she paid. Once those boxes were turned over, move on to next item on TO DO list.

Or your wife may known what she was doing, knew she was paying a premium for expedited delivery, and decided it was worth the backlash from you to get them there on time. I have never had any issue with getting different quotes for different options or estimated time of delivery for multiple services.

Chalk it up, and do it differently next time. You were not scammed.

Did she go to one of those Packaging Depot kinds of places? They REALLY mark up the shipping costs as you are paying them the middle man costs.

How heavy and large were those boxes?

Aren’t you the one who made a thread some time ago about life not being fair and you should just get over it?

personal responsibility…how can we expect the younger generation to have it when adults don’t…

I know plenty of companies where, if employees don’t put in sufficient energy to successfully “up-sell”, they are fired. Why should UPS be any different?

They even half-heartedly try to up-sell every time I go to the Post Office, listing off all the services they know (from experience) that I don’t want. Since they know in advance that I don’t want them (and they all know me personally), it probably is a condition of their employment.

Although the conversation has moved on, I’d like to put in another vote for the post office. They are cheaper and they deliver on Saturdays and the 24th.

That happened to me once. I caught it but I wonder how many times it’s happened that I haven’t caught it. I only caught it because when I’m only buying ~10 or fewer items I tend to add up the price in my head so I know what I should be paying, and the amount I was asked to pay was higher.

I usually use the post office.
Our local branch has a machine that will print priority shipping, tracking & ins labels & is accessible after hours, as are the package & mail slots.

Mini, I once was a mystery shopper for USPS. You bet they upsell and you bet they are required to do it. It was very important that they ask certain questions and tried to suggest services.

I’m not a big fan of the UPS store, unless it is a big package it is cheaper to send USPS.

I bought a cheap postal meter, I do all of my shipping on line. As long as you know how much the package weighs it can be done on line. If it fits in my mailbox I put it in and my mail carrier takes it. She would stop at the house and pick it up too but I hate to make her get out of her car.

My fav USPS horror story was when I paid for Express service for some banking docs. They arrived 17 days later. Wished I had just stuck a stamp on them and sent them first class.

Hope no one was expecting a wii for the holidays.

I mailed something USPS Monday and she told me “I’d have to do priority or it wouldn’t get there by Christmas”…UPS isn’t the only one doing up-selling and I’ll take their delivery anyday over my rural route carrier. She crams to much in our standard size box it takes a wench to get it out and several of my presents have been broken. She doesn’t even attempt to deliver anything bigger and I have to drive a 20 mile round trip to pick it up. UPS and Fed Ex? They bring it in my garage and put it on my kitchen door stoop.

“I mailed something USPS Monday and she told me “I’d have to do priority or it wouldn’t get there by Christmas”…UPS isn’t the only one doing up-selling…”

I don;t know where you are, but if you mail something coast-to-coast on Monday, it would normally only be due to arrive the following Tuesday. So this wouldn’t be up-selling at all.

It is a strange holiday season. I went to the post office today and they wanted $42 something for my package to ship…I walked down the street and paid FedX $19.96…with the same promised delivery date as the post office. The post office has gotten much speedier these days about delivery and I do like supporting my local post office, but I couldn’t justify the cost today.

I had to order a brace for one of our patients a couple weeks ago. It hadn’t arrived yet and we were really waiting on it so I called the company. The guy looked it up in his system and told me that it was “out for delivery” through USPS. That was on Wednesday. It didn’t show up. Thursday-It didn’t show up. Friday-It didn’t show up. I went to the school without the brace and first thing the girl told me was it hadn’t come yet (she had texted one of my co-workers). I got a text a little bit later from said co-worker. She was on her way to post office to pick it up. It had sat there since Wednesday and nobody told us!

sryrstress, in #53 you wrote that it takes a “wench” to get things out of your mailbox.
Did you mean “winch” or “wrench”? (Probably another case of auto-correct gone wrong.)

I had the exact opposite experience at the post office. I was mailing a passport for a visa and the instructions were pretty explicit about using Express mail (and time *is *tight). The person at the post office said it was a total waste of my money it would get there just as fast regular mail.

You have to watch with usps for their if it fits it ships too. Depending what youre shipping it may be cheaper to ship it regular mail instead of in their special boxes. I had the lady at my post office check mine both ways and it cost me 4 or 5 dollars to mail something light across the country to a coworker as opposed to the 8 that it would have cost for the if it fits it ships box that my stuff fit in.

I have noticed that the fed ex person will walk my boxes to the back of my house and leave them on my back patio under the roof when I am not home as opposed to ups leaving things on my door step for everyone to see.

Last week I took a package to PostNet and asked for the cheapest rate to make it by Christmas (they ship by UPS, FedEx, DHL and US Mail). I was quoted by the owner that $26.95 using FedEx was their best rate, and it would arrive by this Wednesday. The package wasn’t that big or heavy, so I passed. I drove another five minutes to the FedEx store, and the price was only $15.30.

I understand a markup, but that was ridiculous. In the future, I’ll drive the extra few minutes when I have a package to mail.
