Compare Penn State to Florida State?

FSU. But I am very biased against PA winters.

Really you can’t go that wrong with either one. Are you OK living pretty far from home?

Great idea philbegas!

PSU is ranked #43 while FSU is #93 in biology nationally, but that isn’t a huge difference, but great attachment thank you merc81!

FSU also has a circus.

Cold weather is a hit or miss really
But you can’t go wrong with Florida’s weather. I actually would prefer to be far from home, I live under the “you only have one life so go out and explore” kinda motto. I love both schools so I will just have to weigh out the pros/cons of each. Both schools have great greek life (a little better at FSU) but that is something that I will be getting involved with. Thanks SouthFloridaMom9!

RightCoaster, my friend’s brother went to FSU and he said the same thing hahahahah

I think you might be using graduate department rankings, which, for various reasons, I personally do not recommend when considering undergraduate programs (though the source in #19 lacks clear methodology, the list does pertain to the undergraduate level). That said, I think if you choose between these schools based on your personal preferences, you will do more than fine, @schaefer406.

I agree, I will be picking the school based off of where I think I will be happiest for my college career, and also where I think that I will thrive and have great opportunities presented to me.

You will be happier going to the beach once awhile. Maybe playing golf in the middle of winter? Maybe not having to wear pants all winter?

In all seriousness, I went to FSU, I had a friend who went to PSU. He flunked out. I did not. I married a prettier lady and have enjoyed great successes in my life personally and professionally, ha.

Every time I went on an interview the interviewer always wanted to talk about school life. Good times.

Great points, I love warm weather. My friend’s brother seems to be doing very very well for himself. Another plus of me choosing FSU would be that I could see my dad since he will be moving to Florida once I graduate

They also have several good eateries with fresh oysters that come from the local waters in the gulf. Mmmmmmm.

Football games are epic. Have you seen the Noles uniforms? So much better than boring PSU.

The campus is very nice. It never snows there, but it does get cool sometimes, so you can break out the cool National Champions sweatshirt you bought in the bookstore.

You and your dad could tailgate and have a blast, and he wouldn’t die from frostbite.

Good luck in Tallahassee, my work is done here.

I don’t think the above is serious
All in all, it sounds like FSU is a better fit, and the academic difference isn’t so great that it’d justify choosing psu. With the Polar vortex, I’m sure a warm winter sounds heavenly, even if spring and fall will e terribly humid.
Do you expect to work in the South?

@RightCoaster All of this positive Nole talk makes me want to gag. :-&

Based on your major (Bio), FSU should be fine. If you wanted to major in engineering or business (as an example) I would highly recommend PSU over FSU. However, FSU’s bio program is fine, and you’re find plenty of Bio related EC stuff in Tally.

Humidity is really only a problem for the first 5 or 6 weeks of the Fall term, by October it’s fine. The Spring term ends the first week in May, while the weather is still great. It’s really only a problem if you attend over the summer. Today the kids at FSU are wrapping up any last minute finals, while running around in shorts and t-shirts.

You should consider where you may want to work after school. PSU’s network is much stronger in the northeast, while FSU’s would be more in the southeast. Just one factor of many to consider. A graduate from either school can do well, anywhere, but it is something to think about.

Good Luck!

Another questions n is whether you have a shot at honors at either one

Biology is a broad field, so you may want to check the faculty rosters and course listings for biology at each school to see if there are any differences in what subareas are offered, and whether any of those present at one but not the other are of interest to you.

@ucbalumnus -

Interesting. When I posted a collegedata link some time ago, CC filtered it out.

Let me tell you RightCoaster, you do make some good points. I am flying to Tally beginning of January with my dad to visit, I’m extremely excited!

MYOS1634, Very good point, plus I can tolerate humidity. I plan on moving south after graduating so FSU would be the better bet from that point of view. Also, I don’t think I would have a shot at honors at either. My stats are
3.85 weighted GPA, with 18 honors + AP classes total, 1230 new (after march) SAT with a 650 reading and 580 math.

Gator88NE thanks for the comment!! although I do see that you are a gator fan booooo
 In all seriousness, I do really love warmer weather, and I plan on moving south once I graduate. As you said, both biology programs are great so I feel as if I would succeed at either schools.
