Comparing U of Richmond to schools like Vanderbilt, Wake Forest, Washington & Lee, Davidson

i cannot comment on how Richmond compares to the other schools you mentioned - however, i know 3 students from my general area who go there and two of them each received financial support (like a stipend) to attend summer programs of interest (one in medical research and the other in a Foreign exchange program) so i can say that the school definitely supports its students in their interests. Although i am sure other schools might do that as well, my understanding is that Richmond very much encourages their students to pursue their interests and they back it up with real ($$$) support.

In 2002, on our southeast college tour, we visited Richmond, Davidson, and WF. Our DD didn’t even want to get out of the car at Richmond. After the visit, she was convinced she shouldn’t have. She thought the school was more conservative than what she was looking for. That may have been the tour guide! Plus
she wanted to major in engineering.

When we got to Wake Forest, she said she didn’t want to bother touring at all. I guess she doesn’t like red brick buildings or something.

She did love Davidson, and applied there as a reach school. There was just something about that campus she loved. I will say, the facilities are fabulous. She was not accepted.

We haven’t been to Vandy so I can’t comment on that one.

I have a student at Richmond. There are friends that have transferred from Vanderbilt and others from larger state schools. The Vandy kid stated that it was too competitive- like not nice to one another- and the Richmond’s academics were just as good (particularly for the major) with much more community and less sizing one another up at every turn. (Vandy parents, please don’t come for me, it’s one kid’s opinion!). This tracks with my kid- students work really hard and are supportive of one another.

a close friend just graduated from Wake and often told my kid they wished they had chosen Richmond. Wake seems to source more from right leaning leaders/alumni, but again, this is a sample size of 1.

My student has loved every minute of their experience. Richmond’s profs are outstanding, students from all over (but yes, a ton from Boston/philly/NY), it’s a great foodie town, balanced/slightly left leaning politically, beautiful trails along the James. A city but super easy to get around. Not enough good things to say, but you can tell I’m not biased, right!? Ha ha
