Sad but I donāt think it is unexpected. Especially when some of these compounders use a different āversionā of the API (and who knows what quality controls they might have).
It is literally impossible to āoverdoseā with the brand-name med. The injector pen is basically foolproof.
This story is misleading and doesnāt specify itās talking about usage of compounded meds (which apparently require some fiddling - I donāt actually know) - until farther down.
My friend who is using the compounded med said she gets one vial with the medicine in powder form and one vial with purified water or something, and then has to mix it with a syringe. I guess its easy to screw it up.
Even health care professionals make mistakes with dosages. It is super easy to screw up dosing in a situation like that. Thatās why the official drugs come in pens, and the prescriber / pharmacist will also provide guidance.
Trusting members of the general public with the vials is not optimal. They likely have no experience with injections and have sometimes gotten the prescription from the equivalent of an online pill mill and thus have no professionals providing actual guidance.
Thank goodness the overdoses seems to just be very unpleasant and I havenāt heard of fatalities, but this is still not great.
I had a box where I think the injection springs were bad. I did the first one and I donāt think anything injected. What to do? So a few days later I used another one and I still think that that wasnāt working! That meant I either had double the medication or none. I called the pharmacy and they said I had to call the manufacturer. That all took a while, they had to authorize the pharmacy to reissue a new box. Should I use the other 2 pens in the box? I did, but again either I was using a dud and not getting meds or they were fine. I finally got a new box and used it. I also used the other two pens (these cost $1000 so I wasnāt going to just toss them). You canāt tell by looking at the used pens whether anything was injected as the little window still has a bubble with liquid in it after injection.
In the olden days, I had to inject myself with a medication. It came in a vial, I measured it out and injected. It can be done. (I am NOT a medical person) If they are just taking purified water and injecting it into a vial, swirling it around and sucking it up into the needle, it isnāt hard.

Glad she was honest about it⦠not that she needed to share. But, so many celebs, who have lost a significant amount of weight, instead say they cut out sodas and started walking more⦠and with those changes lost 60+ over six monthsā¦
Iām a cynic. I really believe the only reason sheās changed her tune about all of this is because sheās on the board and a partner at Weight Watches and WW is revamping its entire model to include these drugs. A few months ago Oprah was criticizing these drugs, although Iām sure she was using them. Transparency at this point fits the new business model.
Do you really believe that intelligent people are unable to change their minds when they find new information that contradicts their former (wrong) impressions?
I donāt think that Oprah Winfrey needs money so badly that she would reverse course in violation of her own beliefs, but maybe that just me.
By the way, WW comprises a small percentage of Oprahās financial holdings. It could probably go out of business entirely and Oprah would still be very, very wealthy.
I 100% believe intelligent people can change their minds. I also know that incredibly rich people can and will do whatever is necessary to keep accruing wealth.
Oprah badmouthed these drugs not too long ago. People on this thread talked about it. You lose weight fast, but not that fast. She was most likely using them while speaking against them.
Why is that hard to believe? The rapid weight loss trend in Hollywood is obviously due to these drugs, but very few are talking about it.
I saw the clip where she said taking these drugs would be the easy way out. To me, she was talking about her self-talk, that thatās how she would feel about herself if she took them. I totally get that. We are kinder and lend more grace to others than we do ourselves. Itās definitely the pull-yourself-up-by-youur-bootstraps mentality with which so many of us were raised.
I agree.l with this sentiment. And I didnāt think of it this way before, but youāre right - this is exactly how I would expect Oprah to talk to herself!
Months ago I would have expressed negative sentiments about these drugs, because in the past, weight loss drugs have always turned out to be less than hoped for, if not downright dangerous.
The past several months have led me to learn more about them, and thus have addressed some of my initial misgivings.I can totally see how Oprah might have initially viewed them. I have no idea what her actual thoughts on the matter were or are, nor do I know what sheās been up to during that time. I donāt see how anyone can claim to know otherwise.
I am in the process of losing weight without drugs, but if I were obese and had spent decades battling with obesity, I would certainly consider them.
I am on an email notification for Novo Nordisk (maker of Wegovy) because I was prescribed it, but my insurance wonāt cover. They sent an email yesterday about another round of supply shortages. I just wonder how they will adjust to mass-supplying users like Weight Watchers when they currently struggle with supply issues (and have struggled on a regular basis)? And who will they choose to allocate the supply to? What happens to individuals who are using Wegovy prescribed through their doctor when they are not able to get it because WW is allocated thousands of units?
ETA: I was just reading an article about the WW deal. The cost will be $99/mo PLUS the cost of the Semaglutide. Not sure if WW will be buying in such high quantities that it will be cheaper to get than through oneās regular doctor or a medspa type place. WW acquired a prescriber for the Semaglutide but they still have to get the supply from somewhere.
āA few months ago Oprah was criticizing these drugs, although Iām sure she was using them.ā
Yesterday I read that the clip showing Oprah criticizing the weight loss drug was filmed in January and not dropped into circulation until September.
Thatās a lot of time to work oneās way mentally through the data and change an opinion.
Now I canāt find where I read it, so I canāt swear to its accuracy.
Thanks for the information. I get the idea that she doesnāt take it all the time. She said that she took it prior to Thanksgiving because that is usually a difficult time for her.
I feel like many people who could loose weight the traditional way are going jump on the prescription bandwagon. If it does turn out that they need to stay on it to keep the weight off, that will get quite expensive (for the insurance companies who will increase premiums and/or for self-pay).
Yes, and there will continue to be supply issues. Iād be concerned with getting on it and then randomly not being able to fill the prescription and then being at risk of gaining it back.
