<p>S2 always bit his fingernails as he was growing up. Now he’s in college. I recently saw him clipping his nails which already appeared very short to me. When I mentioned it to him, he said he tries to keep them clipped as short as possible so he can’t bite them.</p>

<p>I am aware that my nails look terrible. No body dysmoprhia involved. I just don’t care most of the time that they look bad and I don’t see why anyone else should care. Why do any of you care about other people biting their nails unless they are your children and you are trying to help them break the habit?</p>
<p>None of us care if you bite your nails, mimk6. We care about the subject in general, for various reasons, and so we’re discussing it. I’m asking because my brother-in-law wants to stop and can’t, and I was hoping to get some insight on his behalf. It causes him pain and embarrassment. That’s why I care.</p>
<p>I also used to bite my nails for almost 20 years. After having tried awful tasting creams, sheer willpower or wearing gloves, I found some techniques that really worked. </p>

<li><p>Make it a competition with your friends/family/coworkers. You can hand over a certain amount of money that the other person gets to keep if you don’t follow through on your promise. </p></li>
<li><p>Apply cuticle cream to our nails on a regular basis. Oftentimes, it’s a hangnail or a dry nail that causes you to start the biting action. You can prevent this from happening by keeping the nails and hands moist. </p></li>
<li><p>Post reminders around your environment and have people remind you when they see you biting your fingernails. This will help you become more conscious of your actions - which is critical. </p></li>
