The website TheBestSchools.org has come up with a list of the 20 “best graduate programs in computer science,” and the University of California, San Diego made the list at #13 . The rankings are based on several weighted factors, including academic excellence, course offerings, faculty accomplishments, return on investment, and reputation. In ticking off some of CSE’s attributes, the website cites the research of CSE Prof. Michael Taylor (at left) – along with the unnamed CSE Prof. Steven Swanson – on the GreenDroid processor that could “dramatically reduce energy consumption in smart phones. UCSD participates in this type of cutting-edge research and other forward-thinking projects.” TheBestSchools.org goes on to spell out the department’s strengths in theory, computation, software and hardware, and provides information on the requirements to enter CSE’s Master’s and Ph.D. programs. The only computer science programs at public universities ranking ahead of UCSD in the ranking were UC Berkeley (#3 ), University of Texas at Austin (#8 ), University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (#11 ), and University of Maryland, College Park (#12 ). Trailing UCSD in the ranking are University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, University of Washington, Georgia Tech and UCLA.
