Confused-What is the difference between TAG and IGETC?

My daughter is just finishing up IGETC, as well as Tagged to UC Davis for this fall. In order to tag, I believe all of your courses had to have been completed at a CC. It is a program specifically for CC students to transfer over.

According to our IGETC paperwork, students are expected to complete the IGETC requirements BEFORE transferring to a CSU or UC. So, if she completed the classes at a UC or CSU, the IGETC certification is not required for that class as the class was already honored/credits were given at a CSU/UC.

Our paperwork says this:

Restrictions: Students who have been registered at a UC campus MAY NOT (this is underlined not caps on our paperwork) be eligible for IGETC. Students should consult with a counselor regarding this issue. This restriction, though, does not apply to students who have taken only UC summer session or Extension classes.

I note that it only says UC, not CSU. To meet CSU requirements for graduation you must also include a History class and Poli Psy class that are NOT required for IGETC. My daughter decided to take them even though she is tagged at her first choice UC because she is now getting her AA degree at the advice of her counselor–and they were required for a 2 year degree.

If your daughter looks carefully at the lower division requirements for her desired major, I don’t think it will hurt her to transfer in without IGETC. She won’t be able to TAG because of being outside of the CC system first, but some of the schools (Berkeley/UCLA) don’t participate in Tag anyway.

Good Luck!
