Congressional Page Opportunity - Is it Worth It?

no - i got her gray slacks (2 pair) from talbots and the blazer from a department store in the mall. I bought the blend slacks from talbots that can be machine washed - not something that needed to be dry cleaned. Normally she would have had a fit wearing something from talbots - but she is petite, they fit well, looked professional, and could be laundered with little effort. The blazer was also machine washable - and I bought two of those as well. As I recall, it cost about $600 to get her ready. I also bought her a dressy black wool coat that I am about to take to the dry cleaners right now. It still looks great.

Thanks, worknprogress! Talbots…I’d better start working on that one haha! What color does the blazer need to be? I have another question: did your daughter take SAT or SAT subject tests in DC? If so, how did this work?

We had her take her SAT’s in January before she left for DC. I am so glad that we did. She was scheduled to take them on the March test date while in DC, but it had been a really busy week, she was exhausted, and her scores in January were great. We told her to skip them - and use the Saturday morning to sleep and rest up. I felt like having her take them while she was living here, I had a little more control over what she was doing the night before she took them.

She took her AP tests for US History and Statistics while in DC. She studied US History with other students and on her own, and the Statistics on her own. She actually completed the course as an independent study while in DC.

I looked up her info and it seems like she took her subject tests (Literature, Math and History) in June when she returned.

Once again, she was home, so she was a little more rested and focused.

When I look back on what she accomplished, I am really blown away. I do give her a lot of credit. I also know it took planning on our part to look ahead and see how to schedule these things. Your daughter is lucky to have you.

hi!

I am planning to apply for the 2010 summer session? And I was wondering how do I apply and is it hard getting in? I would appericated it if you anwser! Thank!

you have to contact your congressman or senator to see if they can appoint a page for one of the summer terms, and then ask them how to apply. i’m not as familiar with the summer programs but i once looked into it through my own state’s representatives by calling each one and asking directly.

regarding use of computer/email etc:
the senate page program and the house of rep. programs have different rules, and i’m only familiar with the senate page rules.
Senate Pages can not use their own computers to email. they must only email via their assigned page email address. the senate page school is in the basement their dorm, and they use these computers for school work and email. there was little need for their own pc - surprising, but true. i’m pretty certain that they were not allowed to use facebook etc while in dc. Another thing - senate pages were not allowed to have cell phones. they could bring them to dc (to use while travelling from home) but had to ‘check them’ at the dorm. although this seemed like a huge thing (the lack of ability for instant contact w/ your child) it was just something to get used to. you can contact your child through fax, page email, phone message to their dorm room machine, or through a contact person.
there are a lot of rules w/ the program and it is (like a prior poster mentioned) a bit like military school, BUT, they are really so very busy that texting/facebook etc aren’t their priority. Tons of rules, but it is an AMAZING top notch experience of a lifetime.

I’m really interested in becoming a Page next year, but I just had a quick question. is the gpa requirement for freshman and sophomore year combined together, or separate?

adventuregirl, I believe that it is the freshman and sophomore year combined together. For the Page program, the average must be a 3.0 or higher.

This program sounds really cool, hope I’m not too late to get in on it.

Am I too late? I’ll be a senior in the fall

Crap! I would have loved this program!

Edit: Yeah, looks like I’m too late. :(…they probably don’t make any exceptions do they?

Could have applied for this July but it is a little late now and my schedule is already pretty busy.

Thanks so much, levirm! Also, I am thinking about applying for the 2011 Spring Semester for the Page Program. I’m not sure whether to contact a representative right now or later in the fall when school starts. suggestions?

Adventuregirl -

I would contact your representative as soon as possible. Every member is different, but most make their nominations for both terms before school starts. D was a House Page for the spring semester of her junior year and she was notified at the end of her sophomore year.

Thank you, worknprogress. I am definitely going to get on that this week then. I REALLY want to go; it sounds like such an amazing experience!
Are we allowed to apply to both the House and Senate for the page program and then choose from one if we get accepted? I’m not sure which one I want to go though yet.

i recommend applying to both programs. it’s very hard to get, so better your chances by applying everywhere you can. senate and house have different criterea. contact your senator / congressman directly to get info on deadlines for applications etc.

Thanks for all of the responses! I contacted my representative and I’m working on the application. The semester that is open with my representative is for this fall. I am signed up to take 4-5 AP classes this year–how is the transition in terms of school/preparation from the page program to your home school?

It depends on how your school runs its AP programs. Are you on block scheduling or do your classes run the full year? What classes are you taking.

It is a little more difficult to do the fall semester at Page school and return to your home school, so you will have to be in contact with your school counseling office to make a smooth transition. None of the classes at the House Page School are considered AP classes, however, a lot of kids who take classes sit for exam.

DD was a spring page and she took AP History, and her school of residence said it would give AP credit and took exam and got a 5. She also took AP Stat before going to page program and finished on her own and sat for exam.

A lot of kids are disappointed that you don’t get AP credit for classes in DC, so you should be prepared to make compromises if you go. DD did independent work for her local school and that went a long way to make people want to help her.

Good luck!

Thanks so much for your help! I would really like to do the program in the spring semester. I contacted my House representative and the fall semester is the only one open right now. I contacted my Senator but nobody picked up when I called so I left a message. I’ll try again this week and hopefully something will work out for the spring semester! and if it doesn’t, I’m still applying for the fall semester that’s open with my representative. I’d hate to pass up such an amazing opportunity!

I’ll be taking AP Chemistry, AP European History, AP Calculus AB, AP Language and Composition, and Spanish 4. I sort of have a complicated schedule–I attend a private program for half of the day and a public school for the other half. The private program is more rigorous and that is where I will be taking all of my AP classes this year.

Sorry, one more question! Will students be able to take the PSAT while in DC?

All Pages are allowed and encouraged to take all of the big tests: SAT Is, SAT IIs, PSATs, APs, etc.

Does receiving a nomination from your district ensure your acceptance into the program?

i’m not positive on how the house of rep. page works (which is the one you are applying for, right?) this is what i think - i think that only some representatives can nominate at any given time. if you apply through your representative, he/she can nominate you, but that is not a guarentee you will get it. i think there are more nominations then there are openings and the nominations go to a board in DC who reviews them and makes selection. the house of rep page application is the same for all house pages for this reason. perhaps a former house page can offer more detail on this. it’s different for senate pages - each senator who is eligible to nominate a page decides on how they want to make that nomination and they all differ on their application process. the timing varies wildly - with some senators deciding by Feb. of soph year, and others deciding last minute just before the term begins. once you are hired by the senator to be a page its final - there’s not a review board like in the house.
