Cooking with gas (not). Need a new stove

@LBowie – thanks for the recommendation. Is that just a cooktop or also an oven?

Yes BB – they are so needy!

I believe induction requires special cookware, but does heat and cool off quickly. My dad bought 2 small induction units via mail.

Induction requires direct contact between the pan and cooktop surface, so I don’t see how it could be used in an oven. I guess you could have a permanent induction plate which would heat up, but that seems a lot more expensive and complicated than a plain old electric heating element for the same end result.

I have gas dual fuel ge profile now but I will replace it with induction/true convection (the convection in my current model is terrible) next time. I found that only a couple of my many pots and pans are not induction friendly. I love my single induction unit for an extra hob and for candy especially. I think an ideal scenario would be 4 induction burners and a gas wok burner.

@Classof2015 - make sure you have the electrical setup for it! Induction stoves have induction top and electric ovens.

The Miele induction cooktop is awesome. It can communicate with some of their hoods to turn them on automatically when needed. We really wanted to get one, but in the end, my love for gas prevailed. So the sensor that came with the hood sits unused.

@bookworm, the Monogram I owned had a part in the ice maker that actually rusted because it was not made of stainless. We lived with rusty ice cubes for years. That is a serious design flaw. The duct between the fridge and freezer (we had a side-by-side) would get clogged, requiring periodic defrosting. That was unacceptable.

Our next house had a Sub-Zero. That had its own issues, namely icing in the fridge. We used a blow dryer to get rid of that once a month.

Our current house has a Whirlpool. It was installed by the previous owners and probably cost far less than the previous refrigerators we owned. So far, so good, although the produce drawers are too small. It shouldn’t be that hard to make a box that keeps your frozen food frozen and your cold food cold.

I do love our Viking range. It has 4 burners, a griddle and a grill, with a large and small oven beneath. When using the grill, you have to turn on all four fans in the hood, but when you do that, it’s fine. The griddle is super easy to clean, so I prefer that to a skillet when making large amounts of pancakes, grilled cheese, etc.

MassMom, my fridge has no exterior ice maker ( I’ve had so many problems with them). Mine is French style with 2 drawers.

I do enjoy reading about other recommendations for stoves.

We just went through the ice accumulating issue and it seems the thermostat itself was the culprit.

I hate reading this thread :frowning:
Everything here is 15 years old.
We are the King and Queen of fixing our own appliances  .
But I know that one day the appliances will tell us “enough is enough”.
No doubt 1, 2 and 3 in a row :(( .
