Cooper Union [$46k] v. State schools [Delaware <$40k, Minnesota $40-45k, Purdue $46k] v. Finland [Aalto $9-30k] for ChemE

100% agree. Purdue recently added a Data Science concentration option for the chem e major. And practically speaking, my daughter is doing a good amount of data analytics work in her current rotation.

as an international student far from home, with possible VISA work issues later, I would choose U-Del or UMN because the Honors college will give you a social support and advising netork you might need. they will take care of you. I lean toward UMN personally, if you aren’t looking for the traditional package of American college experience.

Do you know about specific experience of ChemE intls? Is it not much since co-ops and internships visas are sponsored by the school anyway, or is it a lot harder and why? Thanks.

Like others have said, Purdue has an excellent ChemE program with international recognition. Cooper Union has a much smaller program in an urban environment which isn’t for everyone. I’m not sure of the career outcomes of CU, but Purdue grads find success everywhere in my experience which may be helpful for your goals.

Personally, I am not well-versed in most European universities (besides Danish ones), so I can’t speak to those.

UDel’s program is excellent, but the career outcomes are mostly restricted to oil and natural gas.

I would encourage you to reach out to the office of international students and ask about internship and co-op placement rates for international students at all the schools on your list.

My limited personal experience is that many companies will not hire international students because they use internships and coops as a feeder to full time employment. In the case of my D’s company there are sites with government contracts and you need to be a US citizen.

Take a look at the companies in that page. Merck Pfizer Regenron Agilent etc. Pharma is well represented. Hiring follows cycles - if the oil industry is profitable as it was for several years they do more hiring

Just to clarify, I agree with you! My response was to “its_obviouzz” post that UDel grads mostly being restricted to oil and natural gas. I also wanted the OP to see the first destination survey.

(My D seriously considered UDel. They have a great chem e program. She just wasn’t happy with the location and preferred to stay in the midwest.)
