Cooper Union for Graphic Design

PS
^eh forget it, B&N.com now carry them, so is Amazon, about $7-8 less, that’s like half of list price.
though I like that Mcsweeny featured it on opening page, and their reviews structure is nice.

If you watch for a special or a “hurt” book, you can do just as good on McSweeney site. Plus their quarterly issues and Wholphin DVD’s are soooo good.

58,000 now? how that happened?

Zadie sighting report!!
I got there an hour early just in case it will be a madhouse like at B&N Union sq David Sedaris or something.
It wasn’t… there were some seat not taken. She now lives and teach here, I guess WOW!! factor might have faded.
She read Smith family’s Christmas tale when she was 5 or something from her new book.
" …IRA come collect money…"
?? Did they do that over there, too? then it is the other IRA, of course.
she got lovely accent. tall, slender, beautiful legs, wearing boots like Robinhood’s. maybe that was her aim for the occasion; tights, tunic-y short dress, pointy head gear with feather shaped matching knit trim. thou the fabric is rather worn and since I was in the front low, I could see fuzzball cringing here there.
nonetheless, beautiful woman, amazing profile and neckline, fingers. owww wanna draw.

proceed to how to write novel, 10 point step-this is from lecture notes she does at Columbia
it’s mostly usual stuff, how to start and stop, let it go.
let it sit in the drawer two years and read as if never read it before, as if you did not write it yourself. You could now see clearly show-off metaphors. tedious wording, wrong comma, semi colon, whatnot. It is critical to become stranger reader. even professional editors miss it if they get too used to what they are reading repeatedly draft after draft.
when you really get on writing, nothing matters anymore but you and your novel. start to write in the morning and blink, it is the evening.

Q&A
how to be a good reader?
-read it. what happens to smart bookie people is, they don’t read. They’d assume oh, this must be that sort of book, from reviews, covers, et cetra and don’t even stop and pick it up.
what differences in learning in between BFA and writer’s community?
-BFA is often taught by writers make students read period books, because writers think learning to write = reading, while writers colonies would talk about what they wrote, discussion, critique etc.
trouble with BFA students is, not knowing certain things if it is pointed out because they think they know already and skim it thru.
read every word, not afraid being not knowing, ask, find out, take time.

The audiences were half young aspiring writers looking and acting as if they are Zadie, and half middle age to old “cultured” folks in the neighborhood.
I totally gotten “White teeth” and brown away but I was much younger then.
I wonder what these Upper East grandma grandpas see in this awful young very smart but how do you say it? hip? is wrong, contemporary? abstract? new sort of writer who write as though she’d wave fabric that could play alternative music if rubbed together.
then I did not like “On Beauty” at all. except one line Levy said to his mom, about how she was better off.

the event was recorded to be posted on B&N.com. if it wasn’t so, I might have asked if she made up with the angry faculty at Harvard.
She uses everything, everything around her become novel. it is only her and her novel when she is in the zone.
maybe some street boy in Boston said what Levy said, Zadie happened to overheard it. no fault in that, fat chance the kid would read that novel.

Question
How do you like NYC?

  • great, laundry done by someone else, pizza delivered, gym on every corner.
    and street people’s dialogues!! stories!!
I was on my way to come here, the girl front of me said " distance is GOOD.I hate every man in NY. far away is GOOD!"
    it just great.

edit
hahaha
8,800 views and
it is MFA, not BFA, of course. preoccupied…

Fascinating. Thanks BandDs. You make it possible for me to feel as if I was in NYC while sitting in Southern Cal. I know what she means about living in “the zone” I had to give up my writing (I still teach) just to help DS2 get through the college app season. LOL! It was one or the other.

?!?!?!?
what do you write? what? what? do tell!!!

whoops 8,900
while I was waiting for Zadie sighting to start, I took copy of “Sick Puppy” off the Mysteries area (did you know that it is categorized as “mystery!!??” ) and look it up.
It is on the beginning of chapter 17

The dog was having great time.
That’s the thing about being a labrador retriever.
You were born for fun. Seldom was your loopy, freewheeling mind cluttered by contemplation and never at all by somber worry, everyday was a romp.
What else could there possibly be to life?
Eating was a thrill. Pising was a treat. Shiting was a joy. And licking your own balls? Bliss.

Darn you B&D. Now I HAVE to go and get a copy of that book!! I have an Irish Red & White
setter (a separate breed from the plain Irish setter) that that passage fits perfectly - altho he has nothing to lick.

try the one you got from the library book sale first to see if you are Hiassen kind of person.
many of his books got basically same tone, plot and characters except the dog.
I am glad they don’t ban nor burn his books…

Neue Galerie is this thing
http://www.neuegalerie.org/</a>
if reading it is too tedious,
It’s on the corner of 5th Ave and 86th street in this mansion two moneid guys bought and made museum out of it 15 or so years ago, dedicated to German and Austrian arts. not that big but oh so pretentious, it was the only one standing in the museum mile who did not offer any free days. so on annual museum mile day ( one day in summer every museums are free) would have the longest line of “now or never!” crowd surround the building with the line, well, mile long.
until
NOW! there have been free first Friday, till end of the year, every month after 6PM, thanks to mayor Bloomberg’s firm, which I had no idea if my kid did not found out by accident.
sadly, it was the last one.
last month, my coworker loved the show and told my kid he should go, he did, came home and said
" I did Neue free!! and the best show ever!!"
they are showing
Frantz Xaver Messerschmidt (what my kid meant)
and
Postcards of the Weiner Werkstatte (my totally educated good tasted coworker meant)

Messerschmidt (I can’t pronounce, hope you can) is this crazy man lived and died in 18th century.
What happened was that the Neue’s prez was in Vienna and happened to see his sculpture, thought it was done by contemporary artist then surprised that he was this ancient man made bust of Maria Theresia from the life!
Imagine, the guy was in Schonbrunn working with her highness while Marie Antoinette was a little girl sneaking out from tutored classes and running around the palace!!
He was a genius but as all genius go, went crazy and gone broke, start pinching himself and made sculpted so called “character head” out of those pained grimaced faces. soft stone or metal, no more fancy bronze but lead or tin so he can poke and pound after he done casting.
he said
" felt persecuted by evil spits. the only way to defend against their attacks was to invoke the magic power of proportions"
made 60 or so, now survive 40 something wrinkled funny faced head in all over the place; Germany, Austria, Louvre, and of course in hands of private collectors in NYC.
this is the first show ever in US and runs till Jan 10, 2011. not so many of them and display is super tacky ( see the images in museum site) like the prez himself said, if noone tells you, you’d think many contemporary artist have done something like this already, don’t know what a big deal.
BUT
it is the big deal. have gained quite a cult following amongst people in the know, now us all free visitors can join the club, thank you mayor Bloomberg.
He once lived with this doctor for nutcase named Dr. Mesmer, whom/where the word " mesmerized" is originated.
to me, his name “Messerschmidt” is messerscmerizing enuff. German is deep and murky.

PS
the postcard show was lovely, too. Hallmark of Hallmarks, esp. ones with animals and creatures by Anton Velim, Moriz Jung, Josef Diveky never heard names till now.
Weiner Werkstatte means Vienna Workshops, founded by group of artist to make everyday life beautiful, made 1000 or so postcards in early 1900.

bookstore is really good one for small museum for Nolde, Schiele, Klimt and shops are free to go any day.
cafe is something else, I have not yet afford to have brunch there. on “to do before I die” list. tonight, they had sampling of German Christmas bread, cut in one square inch 1/8" thick or so. one gulp, not even. but yummy!
15 bucks for the tiny loaf trimmed with white twig with red grosgrain ribbon. awww… frohe weihnachten !!

9,100!!
behind Cooper’s shiny building is this small alley, on corner of E 6th street is a sign saying “Taras Shevchenko place”
I had no idea who that is.

Taras Hryhorovych Shevchenko (1814 – 1861) was a Ukrainian poet, artist and humanist.
wikipedia says; he wrote, painted, voiced concern for humanity, punished, exiled, allowed to back, died. Nothing about coming to US or Cooper but there are monuments and places named after him all over the place.
He is Peter’s contemporary. I don’t think they knew each other but who knows? could someone he knows know someone that met someone that knows him?
Is that naming street anything to do with history of Eastvillege?
need farther researching. TB continued, for his paintings are quite nice.

When I first read poems by e.e. commings I thought “this guy sounds exactly like so and so Japanese poet I love. they are from the same period. they’d be great drinking buddies if they’d ever met.”
but of course they never did. even they could have, no way communicating deep enuff for their literacy minds goes. the poet spoke no English, doubt commings did Japanese. translation always get lost, esp. in poetry.
Is that universal thing, how peoples’ mind works in certain time in history? the “mood” or “smell” of social issues happen coincidentally whether one is in Ukraine, NY, Boston or Tokyo, without even aware of such place and suck counterparts existed?
was there rippling effect? was it a privilege only for highly talented or educated few?
mystery is gone now, for this age of internet and wikileaks.
sad and scary.

“mystery is gone now, for this age of internet and wikileaks.
sad and scary”

I think dear B&D, that it may have changed, but it’s definitely there. The internet is a murky and mysterious place sometimes, scary even. But where else can you exchange art, writings, and current events with people all over the world, without ever seeing their face, or perhaps even knowing their name?

Mystery is alive and well. It’s just that communication is no longer a privelege of the elite.

well said parlsky, so true so true.
in fact I lifted this from the google just now.
http://www.brama.com/news/press/010411tarashevchenkoplace.html</a>
so Cooper wanted to ditch the place back in 2001, Ukrainian community fought to keep the name on the street.
I have been the area million times but never before noticed it was Ukrainian village.
have to go back and eat their food.

group edit

243 Zadie writes like weaving fabric. -could be waved after woven

250 felt persecuted by evil spirits. -they could spit at you, suppose

251 e.e. is cummings. -not comming-s, when I first said his name loud, my kid exclaimed " is he “coming” !?!?!" farther confused and never gotten it right, when I remember extra “c” I forget it was"u"

so it helps to put in the drawer few days, even. read as if I am a stranger reader. I feel bad for real stranger readers reading this.

…or put away for few hours
^that’s extra “m”. not “c” C.u.m.m.i.n.g.s
and the original reason I wanted do edit was the

251 “suck counterparts existed” should have been “such”. two space apart on the keyboard and about same (no!!) at glance stroke structure, “n”, “k” and “h” got jumbled often and there were words as such suck exist, so spell check won’t pick them up.

nave a good knight, I mean, have a good night.

good morning 9,200 !!!
This e-news came in today
http://www.artdaily.org/index.asp?int_sec=2&int_new=43134</a>
this^old painting hang many years in the church house in Yorkshire England, was going to be sold by its owner and possibly shipped out abroad.
there have been rescue mission/fundrasing going on.
as a fake/dyslexic art person, I never gotten it right.
There were Pieter Bruegel the elder (dad) and Pieter Brueghel the younger (son)
dad ditched letter “h” from his name sometime and that is also how you can tell which one is which. I saw and liked younger’s work in the Met and imagining that when read the book “Headlong” by Michael Frayn. I thought I got it, then I was wrong. worse yet, the younger was good at copying dad’s works and painted revised/related versions of same theme.
I missed limited test screening of this film directed by some artist about Bruegel’s work (the director painted backdrop to match the painting!! then digi pasted actors on it!! like, those dancing penguin scene in Mary Poppins!! )
last time I heard they are looking for money support so the film could be shown to the public.
now I know the film is based on the work by the elder (dad), called “The Way to Calvary”
and here, today’s troubled work is by the younger (son) named “The Procession to Calvary”
I am lost again, meaning getting publicity to save the painting now would not going to help anyhow?
what I want to happen is to be able to see the movie but suppose donate a bit to this seemingly right cause, to make the younger’s painting stay where it “should” belong as these important folks suggest?
maybe some important movie folks need convincing are equally confused as I am and could be convinced as a result to sponsor the Bruegel film release, hum???

switters and bears:
I got the book “repeat after me” (this thread page 14 #205) and I only read through 1/4 of it. need more time to finish it.
It is an interesting book! It is amazing an american can write about Chinese so close to our culture. She must know a lot about Chinese. Will post my thought after I get it done.

loveblue
this time I won’t say anything even you paid list price and properly bought it. hehehe
I had mommy’s tea at my place (seasonal bitc*ing behind kids, partners etc’s back opp) and one mom that I passed on my library copy and made her to read said
" needs more descriptive language for how the life in Beijing is. other than that, it could be my diary in NYC when I was young"
she loves actor Jet Li and hyper sensitive for the word “Beijing”
other moms are intrigued and want to read it now.
I was tempted to buy few copies and start book club for real. There are only two or three copies in entire library system. I don’t know if I can get them out before she (under my name) returns it, and no one would bother go to library themselves unless I’d hand it to them.
you can post report in “bookthread” if you like, and let us know how good or lacking its “Beijing” life description is.
I thought it was OK, since she lives as a foreigner and all.

Look what happens when I stay away. Bears is on her way to Cooper without me! I will post more in After the Launch. Life is picking me up and shaking me lately. Don’t know when I will be put down for a rest.

Hi to everyone!

mamabear lives!!! (pool of tears become Rio Grande become atrantic ocean)
