At some point in a prisoner’s life, parole supervision and perhaps restrictions on movement (e.g. home confinement) may suffice as a cost-effective and sensible punishment. It won’t satisfy those who think prisoners who have killed or maimed should only leave prison in a pine box. But, while understandable, this “eye for an eye” perspective is not a sound basis for determining how to use scarce prison resources.

Then maybe a 72 year old man who hasn’t committed a crime since 1986 should also just get house arrest, no prison time, to save taxpayer’s money. (This is sarcasm). (The Golden State Killer.)

No I want an 80 year old man who is blind and infirm and committed his crime decades ago not to cost taxpayers any money. I do not see one single benefit to society to house him in the prison system and said I wanted to hear why that was the best course of action. Birds are tweeting.

If the 72-year-old suspect arrested in the “Golden State Killer” murder and rape cases from 1976-1986 is convicted, would you suggest a similar “house arrest” penalty for him?

People did give you answers. You just didn’t like their responses.

I’m all for reform of our country’s system of incarceration but there are plenty of prisoners who would warrant house arrest before we got to someone who was found guilty of drugging and assaulting someone. There are plenty of people in prison for much more minor offenses.

After someone had spent years in prison, an argument could be made to allow them to have a less restrictive punishment now.

That’s not the case for either Cosby or the Golden State killer. These men shouldn’t be rewarded for evading justice or covering up their crimes for decades by society now giving them a lesser punishment. Had they been in prison since some of their earlier known crimes in the 70’s, paying off that debt to society, then it could make sense to release them at this point under some sort of house arrest.

This 96 year old is not to old for prison for crimes committed over 70 years ago. If the crime warrants a prison term then it should be served.

I’m really having a hard time understanding someone who feels Cosby shouldn’t be punished like anyone else or defends people like Brock Turner. What about the victims?
