I’ve heard things like “doing COSMOS for a summer is the equivalence of raising your GPA by 0.2” and stuff like that. Someone else said that COSMOS gives you 200 points during the UC admissions process (where they add up your GPA, SAT, circumstances, etc. by points). Does anyone know if any of this is true?

UCSD, which converts all factors into a score, will give you 300 points for participation in “academic development preparation programs.” it’s a pretty nice boost.

for UC’s that don’t use a scoring system and do a holistic comprehensive review instead (berkeley, ucla), it’s difficult to say how much of an effect these programs will have, but i’m sure it’s a benefit, especially if you emphasize in your essays how participating in such programs have helped you overcome obstacles.

While UC does look favorably on COSMOS participants, exactly how many points is not that clear.

In the Personal Statement section of the UC Davis application process, the instructions state:

Question 1: Academic Preparation

The university seeks to enroll students who take initiative in pursuing their education (for example, developing a special interest in science, language or the performing arts; or becoming involved in special programs including summer enrichment programs, research or academic development programs such as EAOP, MESA, Puente, COSMOS or other similar programs). This question seeks to understand a student’s motivation and dedication to learning.
