lol, I don’t like carbonated beverages and give my cup away when I get the hot dog.
I tried Costco Same-Day delivery for the first time today. It’s powered by Instacart, but seems to be separated from the rest of Instacart, with different interfaces and different prices. For example, a credit on Costco Same-Day cannot be used on Instacart.
My impression was positive, more so than with typical grocery delivery services. For example, when an item was out of stock, the driver called me to discuss the many options available for replacements and which one I’d like best. I agreed on one that was not offered through the standard online menus. The other driver appeared to wait ~15 minutes for rotisserie chicken to come out of oven. When there was an issue with price on my order, It was easy to reach customer service. They gave me a credit for the full amount of the item, essentially giving me the item for free. I also find grocery delivery more of a time saver with Coscto than other grocers due to being further away and taking more time to park and shop at Costco than at other grocers.
Prices on Same-Day were on average ~15% higher than in store, with a good variation from item to item. However, one can make up for that ~15% increase with the 20% discount on Instacart gift cards sold at Costco, making prices on average lower than in store. Costco also currently has a coupon for 30% off a $50 Same-Day order, which can stacked with the 20% gift card discount above. My net cost was $48 for the following items, which were split between Costco Warehouse and Costco Business Center. Some of the items were lower priced at Business Center than Costco Warehouse and vice versa. At least one of the listed items is only sold at Business Center and online, and at least one of the listed items is only sold at Costco Warehous and not Business Center.
12 Count Bounty Advanced Paper Towels (on sale this month)
2x 10lb Quaker Oatmeal (on sale this month)
12 Count Trident Atlantic Salmon Burger
12 Count Pierre Grilled Chicken Sandwich
2x Whole Rotisserie Chicken
135 Count Dixie 20oz Bowls
6 Count Gallon Crystal Geiser Water
I see that Sam’s Club also offers a service called “Same Day” delivery. I can’t comment on how it compares to Costco.
I use Costco Same-day delivery probably once a month. I never knew about the instacart gift cards sold there. Thank you for the tip!
The Pierre Grilled Chicken Sandwiches used to be my favorite lunch until Costco stopped selling them. There are no Costco Business Centers here, and I can’t find them anywhere else…
I haven’t tried the same day delivery at Sam’s Club but I do know that Costco has a 15% mark-up using their service through on Instacart. Regardless, Sam’s keeps their prices the same, no matter which service you use. That’s a money saver right there.
Our small dog is getting old and she doesn’t tolerate dog food anymore. I can get a Sam’s rotisserie chicken, peel off all of the skin, and I have natural dog food for the whole week for $5. No complaints from the dog
I did these for my Leah for the last year of her life - she loved it.
It’s only a moneysaver if you don’t or aren’t eligible to use the Costco 20% discount off Instacart mentioned in my post above (an extra 30% off $50 offered this month, in addition to the 20% gift card discount). 15% markup with 20% discount leads to lower prices than in store on average.
Among the reasons I prefer Costco is that they negotiate fairly with their employees’ union.
Costco is increasing its pay to more than $30 an hour for hundreds of thousands of workers, with clerks at the top of the retailer’s pay scale set to make almost $32 an hour in March. Costco — which employs 272,000 people across the United States and in Canada — says its workers will soon receive hourly increases of 50 cents to one dollar, continuing its strategy of keeping ahead of the competition when it comes to worker compensation. “We believe our hourly wages and benefits will continue to far outpace others in the retail industry,” Ron Vachris, the retailer’s president and CEO, said in a memo Tuesday to employees…The Issaquah, Washington-based retailer will pay top-of-the-scale clerks $31.90 an hour and top-of-the-scale assistants $30.20 an hour, starting in March. The latest version of a three-year employee agreement calls for two additional $1 hourly increases in March 2026 and March 2027, Costco said. Bottom-of-scale clerks and assistants are getting 50-cent hourly increases, making $21 and $20 per hour, respectively. The company is also adding vacation time for new employees during their first year, and giving workers with 30 years of employment an additional week of time off, providing six weeks in all.
Along these lines, I am very aware of the DEI policy at both stores. I would rather spend my money at Costco than at Sam’s.
I’m guessing you have a small dog?
Most definitely. I’m scared to know how much rotisserie chicken would feed a Doberman
I know some might label be as a heretic but we officially dropped our Costco membership in favor of Sam’s Club. And well, it’s mostly because Sam’s Club is only 4 minutes from our house. Though, Sam’s Scan and Go feature is quite awesome. No lines.
Google “ Opossum eats whole Costco chocolate cake. Fans have big feelings: ‘Me too girl’
Here is a screenshot of my local paper.
I’m laughing hysterically. I’m known to leave fruit and vegetables outside on the deck when the overnight temperatures drop to low thirties. Haven’t done that with chocolate cakes but now I know that is not a good idea!
Oh my! Hope he’s ok! I must say I often put food out on our screened porch if it’s cold out and I don’t have room in the fridge. Apparently I’m not too smart!
The things those of us in warm climates learn from those in colder climates! Never would have thought about keeping food outside during cooler weather. I will say, however, that I’d be ticked off at the opossum for eating a chocolate cake. It’d be worse, however, if it was the discontinued All-American Fudge Chocolate Cake rather than the chocolate cake with the mousse filling. The All-American ranks as one of my favorite chocolate cakes from anywhere, ever.
Here is the (hopefully) non-paywalled story:
Smart beast. Ate a fine dessert and got free medical care afterwards!
I was at Costco on Monday and as I passed by the chickens I put one in my cart. Then when I passed by again (I was at a different store and not shopping in an organized manner) there was a line waiting for the chickens to come out. A little later I had to run back to get my brother another box of danish (he never remembers that you have to get 2) and the line was even longer. It’s crazy how long it has been taking to get the chickens out and how long the lines get waiting for one (or 5).
That’s exactly the reason we shop at Sam’s Club.
Hey all! I just recently joined Costco–yay! Loving it–switched a prescription there that CVS has been fouling up for months, and generally enjoying the bargains.
Quick question (hope this is okay)–can someone share their online account with family? I mean can they use someone’s login and their own address/credit card, or will Costco throw the account owner into Costco jail and cancel their account?
(Not that I would ever do that, of course…just academic curiosity).
I’ve never had an issue when I’ve allowed family to use my online Costco account.
