Coughing Remedies

I’m not one to spend a whole day lying around the house and I have still been able to sleep at night so I don’t want to go the codiene route - it the cough during the day that drives me crazy!!!

I have had it last spring. The cough lingered for weeks!
I used lot’s of honey and cough drops/hard candy.
My vocal cords have suffered a lot after that, took me months to be bale to sing again at church
Did you know that you can get a pneumothorax from coughing???

I am tempted to try vicks on the soles of my feet.

The second post mentioned Delsym. That’s what we’ve used ever since my kids were tiny. Its advantage is that it lasts for 12 hours.

In many states, you can get cough syrup with codeine without a prescription. The issue is that the pharmacy may not want to dispense it.

Hot lemonade, Delsym, and the vapo rub on the feet (remember the socks). I have no idea why it works, but it does. Lots of warm fluids–it not lemonade or tea try chicken soup. I usually do the soup and tea, but DD prefers hot lemondade.

I swear by the mentho-lyptis cough drops. For some reason they calm the post-nasal drip cough. I tried the sugar free ones, but sucked so many that the sorbitol gave me diarrhea. Now I use the regular ones, followed by tea. Throat-coat tea has slippery elm bark that is very soothing.

My sister gave me this recipe years ago when nothing else would work to soothe a cough.

1 tsp. whiskey, 1 tsp. honey and 1 tsp. lemon juice. Mix them together and warm them in the microwave. Works like a charm.

looks like the vapo rub on the feet is getting a few votes!

I get horrible, long-lasting coughs when I get sick. The discovery of Zicam Cough MAX Cough Melts was a great event for me. I could take more than one at a time if I needed without other substances in the medicine making me ill!

(Of course, if you take too many, you start tripping - the active ingredient is dxm - but I never had to take more than 3 at once to bring the cough to a manageable level, and most people would need more than a dozen to get that problematic effect.)

abasket - is your cough caused by post-nasal drip?
if so then take an antihistamine to dry you up.
Don’t know if they still make it but I used to give my kids Benelyn Cough Syrup. It was benadryl + dextromethorphan in a syrup form. would stop the cough and knock them out ;)

My old stand by is normally Robitussin DM for during the day. Carry the bottle with you and slug it every 4 hours.
Nothing and I mean nothing works like codeine. I have been in the position of begging for that too. I never throw it away either - I have bottles that are years old in my medicine cabinet - just in case!

Yep, did take an antihistimine and that did help some. I’m improving, my D is improving, now my son has it…really I wouldn’t be surprised if we have the scary flu. Hopefully, we get it and be done with it…

Another vote here for the Vapo rub on the feet. I have used it and it def. works. A friend used it in the middle of the night on her 8 year old and it worked for them, too.

My dad uses Fisherman’s friend cough drops (check Amazon for 'em) for a tickle associated w/ Parkinson’s. Mucinex helps, too, by loosening up the phlegm (making it more liquid and less sticky I know yuck but there it is) so it can come up more easily.

We used the yellow liquid cough/cold stuff when the kids were little - that has the same ingredient (I think quafenisin) as the Mucinex.

Good luck!

Did anyone mentioned onion syrup?
You chop the onion really fine and layer it alternating with sugar.
Use tons of sugar
Place in the sunny spot - in a few hours you should have some syrup.
It does not taste too bad (thanks to all the sugar) but stinks like heck. So cover your nose and enjoy! It does wonders…

I swear by Buckley’s cough syrup…and yes, it really does taste awful, but it also works better than any other OTC cough medicine I’ve ever tried.

Bumping this thread up as I just started a similar one. I’m being a big whiner but don’t get sick all that often any more so a few nights of bad sleep have sent me reeling. If any of you are still listening, thanks for the tips. I might try the Vaporub tonight. (I’ve had a regular old chest cold–nothing in my nose, just congested chest that feels much better, but the cough lingers. I think my throat is just so dang annoyed. DH did offer to shoot me about 1:00 this morning. . .)
