From the NPR On Point recording of the radio piece, I like and agree with what the caller who was a professor said about the changing definition/expectations of what a middle class family is and has. In our parents’ childhood and even our own, the expectations were much more modest in terms of housing and material possessions.
I actually think many of the callers made more pithy comments and insightful observations than NG.
I thought NG was great. I think his views are very similar to many who are criticizing him. I thought the callers were interesting.
He did get screwed on taxes. He is not rich. He can’t afford to fix his roof. He did pay for part of his kids’ college education. He got screwed on financial aid. He inherited a car with over 100,000 miles on it. That’s his car. His dad died. So his dad is not screwed over.
I know the cost of the house bugs people. It costs a lot of money to live in certain places. If he bought a cheaper place, he would not be rich.
@emilybee, the link is above. You might like the show.
There was a study mentioned in the show and to live a middle class life (the American Dream) in some areas requires an income of $130,000. Obviously, some places are cheaper and expectations on what it takes to live a middle class life have risen.
There is is lot of anger in society. Things are going to get very interesting.
