<p>Neither does being a non-rainmaker. The two are pretty independent but at least a rainmaker has to be at the top of his/her field. In order to run a good research operation you have to be somewhat good with people as research is a team effort today.</p>
<p>There are many personable, interesting and effective lecturers who aren’t research oriented (see profs at top LACs, Dartmouth, Brown, etc.).</p>
<p>And being able to deal effectively on a one-on-one basis or with a small group of people is different from being an effective lecturer in front of a classroom full of students.</p>
