We have granite in our kitchen, sealed it once, and it looks like new. We have Silestone in our downstairs kitchen (in-laws…) and it it great. We have granite in our laundry room with just one spot that seems to have lost its shine. The worst is the marble in our kids baths room. The staining is awful.
Another vote for soapstone. A friend has it and if you like the look, it’s great.
Someone in our house forgot a plate with spaghetti sauce on the counter… when I came down to the kitchen in the morning, it looked like a murder scene, lol. The avatars trampled through it and made a giant mess! The beautiful countertop (Cambria quartz called Berwyn) looked brand new after wiping it with a soapy sponge!
Not all granites are made equal. Some don’t need sealing, and some are porous (like what we have in the bathroom but it is functional, and we tested it for radon, so it stays). I would not rule out granite if you like it. I would take a sample from the stone yard and try smearing it with the worst offenders like beets, tomato paste, red wine…
Our plan called for a sink in our island, but after having it on back order, we cancelled it. We loved using the island as a work surface, buffet table without having the hole in it. If the next owner’s want to cut the hole, the plumbing is all there.
I also have the large double sink with the lowered divider. Love it! I opted out of the blanko because I could not guarantee their biscuit color would match the biscuit color in the quartz. I look at white shades all day and having a cream base/blue base clash would make me crazy. So I went with stainless, matches the appliances. Very easy to wash cookie sheets and large pans.
Igloo yes there are solid colors of Cambria Quartz. I put a white in a rental unit because I thought it would stand the test of time and not offend potential renters. I don’t know if Curtis Lumber is national but they have a nice selection of Cambria.
Definitely don’t want to derail the discussion but what granite sealer do people use? Is one any better than another? We’ve used a couple over the years but I don’t know if I should be using anything with a particular ingredient, etc.
We use Stonetech Impregnator Pro as a sealant. It was recommended by our installer, and the place that sells granite near us. But I have to say…my granite is sealed…so I’m not really sure what putting a sealer on top of the sealed granite does. It’s not like it’s sinking in or anything. And my granite looks and acts exactly the same before and after re-sealing (it’s almost 10 years old and I sealed it once about 5 years ago…and have the stuff to do it again when I feel like it).
We use DuPont Stonetech revitalized and cleaner about once a month, and my understanding is it has a little sealant in it too.
For daily cleaning, we use Method Daily Granite Cleaner (thank you @jshain ).
Regarding the island. Ours has nothing on it…just a nice surface. It’s great for collecting mail, and other odds and ends, but cleans off well to use for prep and buffet serving.
Mine is Ivory Fantasy granite, a lighter color, and I really like it.
My Blanco sink is white. I wanted a white sink and it’s amazing! We also have white appliances…which I hope to replace with…white appliances. Do they still make those?
We have a lovely stainless sink with stainless drainboards emptying into it on either side, plus the stainless deep sink. It goes fine with the white corian with light grey veining.
Have had them since prior owners installed it 7 years before we bought house with remodeled kitchen. It’s easy to care for and has not stained in our decades of minimal care.
Thanks for the feedback. We had granite for years and every couple of years we would seal it. No idea if it helped or not. We’ve had our current quartzite about two years so I’ve been thinking about it…but maybe I don’t need to seal it. I somehow thought it was standard maintenance but it sounds like that’s not necessarily the case.
" I am amazed at people who think it is high maintenance" - From what I’ve read (maybe here on CC a few years ago?), it depends on the particular granite. I see the @BunsenBurner had similar comments above.
