@MADad So funny! S and I say that to each other all the time. So many great lines from that movie.
Fast Times at Ridgemont High
Pacific Heights
The Game (Michael Douglas)
Wall Street
Animal House
Airplane!
Paper Chase
Ferris Bueller’s Day Off
Body Double
Working Girl
Paper Chase and Fast Times will always be on my favorites list! Wall Street, another must see.
Haven’t read all, but I will never tire of watching:
-Monty Python and the Holy Grail
-Animal House
-Groundhog Day
-Gone With the Wind (yes, it has problems in modern context, still a great movie.)
-Any Lord of Rings movies
-Almost any Alfred Hitchcock
-Election
-Star Wars movies before they were confusingly renamed
-The first two Indiana Jones movies
-The first two Pirates of Caribbean movies
-Trainspotting
-Stairway to Heaven/A Matter of Life and Death (Pressburger/Powell)
-All James Bond movies, EXCEPT the awful Quantum of Solace. Even the Dalton Bond movies were better than that. And I do think Craig is a very good Bond.
-Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
-The Last Emperor
-First Jurassic Park
-Fargo
ETA:
-Inglourious Basterds
-Django Unchained
-Get Out
So many others. I think I would actually love to rewatch a bunch of TV series, including Narcos, Unorthodox, Breaking Bad and Chernobyl.
My suggestion is to chose individual directors and watch their portfolio.
This summer DS has been watching all the movies of Stanley Kubrick, Quentin Tarantino, Martin Scorcese, Jordan Peele, and Bong Joon-ho. The other day he told me, “Dad, I really enjoyed A Clockwork Orange, but it was weird watching it with you.” Sigh…
@marrast , thanks to you, I had to add three additional movies, haha.
I have never been able to watch A Clockwork Orange. I’ve tried three times. It’s toooooo much.
@Lindagaf a fine list indeed. Glad you include Gone with the WInd. Regardless of the times, a classic movie with fine acting. @marrast love the director list motif. I actually do that same thing with actors.
Pacino, DeNiro, DuVal, Morgan Freeman, Denzel, Hanks, Paul Newman, Robert Shaw…
Meryl Streep, Jodie Foster, Sally Field, Charlize Theron, Judi Dench, Nicole Kidman…
And of course the classics like Brando, Fonda, Stewart, Jack Warden, Jack Klugman, Hal Holbreck, and on and on.
Oh, how could I forget Life is Beautiful! That’s a truly great movie. In a similar theme, I also really loved JoJo Rabbit.
Sharing movies with our kids has been mostly hit with a few misses.
Our son watched Animal House with us before he left for college. Big hit. Monty holy grail, big hit. Caddyshack didn’t age so well. War Games seemed quaint, but still a good story. After taking D to visit a college near Amish country in PA, we thought we would all watch Witness. It was awful. Hubby and I both remembered liking it, so it’s a bit of a shame we both thought it was bad this time around. Funny how some films withstand the times.
I used to watch a VHS tape of Gone With the Wind every time I was home sick from school. I loved that movie. A few years ago our movie theater played it - intermission and all - on the big screen as part of their Flashback cinema series. I think I can recite the whole movie, but it was just so different seeing it on the big screen. So many little details I missed on the TV.
H and I used to see many of these movies as part of the Flasback cinema series pre covid. Hopefully, some day it’ll come back.
Tonight’s family feature …The Kings Speech.
When my S was home we ran through a lot of the old Eddie Murphy movies…Trading Places, Beverly Hills Cop, 48 Hours, Dr. Doolittle, Coming to America. Trading Places and the first Beverly Hills Cop were particularly good (as light entertainment) I thought.
Love them all. Big Eddie Murphy fan from his SNL days. Trading Places is one of my all time favorite comedies. What a great storyline. Dan Akroyd is another fav of mine.
@MADad My sister teased me, two Christmas faves I’m one of the few, never saw It’s A Wonderful Life (Jimmy’s voice) and A Christmas Story (mean dad). But I have a list I watch annually but after Thanksgiving.
Movies to add, Witness with Harrison Ford, Some Kind Of Wonderful, Broadcast News, Rudy, The Talented Mr. Ridley,
The Emperor’s Club, Wonder Boys, Almost Famous,
The Social Network, The Peanut Butter Falcon.
