Crazy - L&S admits being sent DNA testing kits?!?!?

<p>I first heard about this from Jasper Rine of course-[url=&lt;a href=“http://blogs.berkeley.edu/category/science/20100712/?full=1]article[/url”&gt;http://blogs.berkeley.edu/category/science/20100712/?full=1]article[/url</a>]. For those who don’t know who he is, Jasper Rine is a Howard Hughes geneticist who received a $1million grant a while ago. Now I don’t know how much more research funding he has been able to obtain recently but before money was used to revamp Bio1A lab. Now I guess Jasper has a little extra cash and he along with other collaborators have come up with a project in which only Freshman students can participate. Have my DNA analyzed Jasper? hell no, not for you. I’d take my SNPS elsewhere thank you very much.</p>

No one will know it’s your DNA that is being screened for the 3 relevant gene. They gave you two barcodes I presume. One to label the vial and the other for you to keep. When you send the labled vial back they will sequence your DNA and upload everyone’s results online via barcodes that only you will know. If you’re not comfortable with this then don’t do it, duh. But c’mon are you not the least bit curious as to how well your liver can tolerate alcohol or lactose. :)</p>

<p>babydragon, even though they identify you with a bar code, they still have your name because you send in your DNA with a contract that has your name and signature on it.</p>

<p>August 6th I think. You should double check to be sure. Caltanner, did your address change? I know my friend got his a couple of days before me because I changed my address over the summer. This package is not that important but if you are really interested in participating in the DNA analysis, then you should contact the Letters & Science office and ask about your package for the “On the Same Page” program.</p>

<p>Yay I just got a thin envelope with a consent form, and some instructions! But I don’t understand, where is the other material I am reading about? I have no bar-codes or zip-lock bags</p>

<p>WHAT!?!?! caltanner, there is supposed to be a zip lock bag that contains the actual DNA test kit inside and two barcodes. That is like the most important part in the envelope. You should have gotten that and the consent forms. You should ask them to send you another package then :(</p>
