Crazy! Retired 71yo cop kills a moviegoer over TEXTING!

Well, there could have been negligence involved if Reeves did or said things that a reasonable person would have interpreted as threatening or belligerent, in which case security should have been notified. But for all we know, Reeves went over to the 16 year old kid taking tickets, the kid said “That’s not my job. You need to speak to a manager” and Reeves declined to wait. Or, Reeves could have spoken to someone who told him that the theater’s policy didn’t apply to previews.

I don’t think it’s clear if he ever spoke to management. All it said is that he went to find the manager who was busy with another customer. The website’s list doesn’t say it’s only during previews. But all things considered, most don’t really care during previews. I do find the glow of someone’s phone screen, even several rows down, distracting, and people talking behind me equally distracting, but don’t consider it a big deal during previews.

According to reports, he never spoke to a manager because the mgr was busy with something/someone else. This may have further annoyed him.

I’m still wondering what his wife was saying/doing during all of this. Who among us would have just sat there while our spouses were carrying-on about something minor?

Based on what?? We do not know what he thought or felt. Conjecture and speculation is just that.

IIRC, m2ck, you conjectured this in a previous post :

Maybe. Maybe she is an abused spouse. Or maybe she is shy or conflict avoidant. Or knows better than to jump into a fracas, especially having lived with a police officer. We.simply.do.not.know.

{quote]And yes, the victim’s family has a reasonable lawsuit against the theater chain.

[/quote]

I haven’t heard anything yet that leads me to believe the victim’s family has a case. They doesn’t stop them from suing. Proving that something like this is foreseeable is a pretty big hurdle.

Total aside, and a minor issue in the scheme of things, but I feel badly for the victim’s wife who called in sick to work and took a playday. Oops. Busted. That said, USAA is a good employer. Probably whould have been no big deal no matter what.

The word “may” means that I’m not basing it on any known info. I didn’t say, “this would have further annoyed him” or “this further annoyed him”.

It does make sense, though, that if a very upset person goes to the manager hoping to get support in a matter, and that manager isn’t available, then the person’s irritation level may increase.

I was really responding to the post that wondered if he had actually talked to the mgr.

Sure, he may have been frustrated, or annoyed or whatever, but we simply can’t get in his head, and its concerning the the hypothesizing could potentially lead to rumor mongering. Just a thought.

What in the world makes this thread out of all other threads all of a sudden above hypothesizing?

Isn’t that what we do here?

It seems to stand out more than usual here. IMO, its better to stick with what we know in these cases, so it doesnt become another Duke LAX scenario. And yes, what was “in the news” there turned out to be wrong, but the flames were further fueled by wild speculation and accusations and the such. Serves no purpose. JMO.

I’m not sure when the change happened, sax. I was catching up on this thread and thought the same thing…

The honest and complete story is not known. Only provided to us are the articles presented to us. With articles and evidence comes varied interpretations. The posters previously have always shared their interpretations.

This thread started with accusations and theories about mental illness, personality disorder, dementia, character assassination, etc. Its distasteful. What he did was awful. But lets find out the facts. What a concept.

You may consider it distasteful, but many posters didn’t mind theorizing why what happened happened.

Well thats obvious. Since you are in the area, perhaps you can post links to what is in the news there. That is preferable, IMO, to the ongoing unfounded declarations.

M2ck simply stated he might have been more annoyed because he did not get to talk to a manager.

And theories about his wife, and why she didnt intervene, and theories about his mental health, or cognitive status, being “off the deep end”, had a “man vs man he is disrespecting me” mentality, etc. She said earlier that it was a midnight screening and wondered if he was intoxicated. Well, no, it was a MIDDAY screening. This is how rumors take on a life of their own. All I am suggesting is to dial it back a bit and consider getting whatever factual information might be available before deciding that he is an alcoholic, power-mongering, control freak wife beater (exaggeration for effect).

I think there are big differences between speculations and declarations.

I don’t think there’s any danger of this being a Duke Lacrosse issue. In that case, there was just accuser and the accused. She said, they said.

In this case, there are some disinterested 3rd party witnesses.

I can’t say that I’ve read every post, but I haven’t seen any really wild-haired theories. It’s not like someone has suggested that the cop was paid to off this guy. lol

What Reeves did was awful, no doubt. It’s the most distasteful thing. Less distasteful would be that he’s mentally ill. That could mitigate some of his guilt. That’s actually preferable than being just a hot-headed murderer.

(for the record, I’m not saying that he is mentally ill. That’s for a professional who has evaluated him to conclude.)

JMO…not a declaration. ;)

She said earlier that it was a midnight screening and wondered if he was intoxicated. Well, no, it was a MIDDAY screening

Yes, I did. And later I asked for time clarification because different news reports were conflicting.

Either way, he could have been intoxicated. Some people are intoxicated at 1 pm. Surely he was tested for drugs/alcohol after arrested.

Until there is a mental health evaluation, I saying claiming this guy was acting out of mental illness is B.S.

He had the sound mental ability to decide to leave the theater and go to the manager but when he returned he somehow became mental ill? It does not make sense and I can’t see any judge letting a jury hear that defense at this point.
