Sounds a bit like my son, only different geography (we’re in Chicagoland). Some majors that might be of interest include Cognitive Science, Artificial Intelligence, Digital Humanities, and Biomedical Engineering.
Also, for truly hands on, what about Nursing?
All kinds of different types of engineering are required in manufacturing. My D worked as a chemical/polymer process engineer this summer (chem e major) and it was a very active job with lots of different projects. She found the environment very exciting.

Closing the loop on this thread and thanking all who offered suggestions in the discussions. We’ve decided to apply to 3-4 in-state schools, mostly public, including the flagship uni, and to do so on an Undecided basis for now. Thanks again, all.
