Creative methods of cheating?

When I was a TA for a huge contingent of students spanning 3 sections, it was not uncommon for students to ask for regrades. Often it amounted to “classmate got 5 points for doing X and I only got 2 points for doing the same thing”.

Personally, I can only ever remember going in once with an exam to question the grading, although I have so many credits, it probably happened a few times.

Tomorrow’s ACT just got cancelled in Korea and Hong Kong due to compromised test booklets. There is a special place for cheaters and liars…

There is a special place for ACT - a multibillion dollar industry, that can’t protect its test booklets. No sympathy here.

What about how the College Board recycled March’s test for June test takers, in the US?

Doesn’t matter how much money the company makes. That’s silly for them to recycle but there’s no evidence that that was the case for a CT. Cheaters are cheaters and they deserve what they get

I was recently reminded that some students ask to take exams at a different time for one reason or another. Often, the reason is wholly legitimate (e.g., health issue or family emergency). At the same time, the request is often bogus, and it is withdrawn when the student meets with resistance.

A strong student once asked to take the final exam early because his parents had planned a trip to Florida during the middle of the exam period. I came up with three possible explanations for the request: 1) the parents had actually planed a trip, 2) he wanted to optimize his exam schedule, and 3) I might give him the same exam so he could pass along questions and answers to his friends. I declined the request and the student took the regularly scheduled final without a peep, but I was sorely tempted to call his mom and apologize profusely for having ruined their plans for a family trip.

At my institution, we always have the student see his or her dean when seeking accommodations based on a health issue or family emergency. This has many useful features. For starters, many of us would prefer not to hear details of a student’s health issues; we just need verification that accommodation is justified. In addition, it is useful for the dean to know the extent of any issue with which the student is grappling. Finally, it is useful for one person to be a repository for all the information for those cases in which, for example, a student has three grandmothers pass way within a year and a half.

the exam at a different time is the big cheat at my Ds school. Our top ranking 10-12 kids are famous for being absent on test day and then have a variety of ways of cheating after. The most common is to get the questions from kids in class - the teachers typically give the same exam. The next is that they often take the exam after school or during a studyhall session where there is less supervision - sometimes kids are left alone while the teacher runs to the office or gets other work done (or talking with other teachers unaware of what student is doing). With less supervision, the students use their phones to text classmates asking about answers or to simply look answers up. The popular kids all help each other out.

I really don’t understand the parents who think it is OK to either constantly write their kids excuses to miss school for this or the parents of the “helpers” who think it is fine that their kids are improving their social standing by helping others cheat the system. In our world of GPAs being separated by hundredths/thousandths of a point and scholarships going to those in the top 10% I find it absurd that any parent thinks this is OK. If your child is getting an advantage by cheating it speaks to their character and where is the line in life as to honorable accomplishments and gaming of the system. If your child is the enabler, they are scamming other hard working students out of potential awards, college acceptances, and scholarship money. It is not “victimless” and when looking at kids who may only have one chance at a college education if the merit $ is there who are competing with cheaters and social climbers who are willing to support them. If they want to feel good about helping someone and help their self esteem - how about volunteering to tutor low performing students so they learn the material?
