Credit card for tuition payment??

Hey colorado_mom, I had a kid at Northeastern for five and a half years. No more credit card payments to them! It was like a “free” flight home for every semester paid, because they took my Visa card with no fees, and the bill was so high. (as I explained over a year ago in post #6)It was also helpful that I have a very high credit limit on that card. Local state university also takes Visa with no fees charged for S#2, but it’s a lot less money… but that kid doesn’t need to fly home so it all evens out for us.

Yea, it slightly takes a bit of the sting when at least you get the small benefits your CCard gives. I would be happier if the Us would cut our fees and tuition 5 percent or more instead.

Paying tuition and other college expenses with a credit card is fine if one is going to be paying the charged amount off right away. It is a bad idea though if one is using credit cards to finance long term a college education at 26% APR!

We use cc for tuition payments, college does not charge service fee.

Of course, it makes NO sense to our family to use credit cards EVER if we don’t have the funds to pay in full before incurring interest and/or finance charges. We have charged our van and many other expenses with credit cards but NEVER paid any interest.

If folks need time to pay the credit card, there are some that offer introductory 0% interest for several months (up to 12 months), so they could stretch out the time in which they gather the funds to pay off the bill. That is how we paid for our van–saving up so we could pay off the amount in full before interest would accrue.

We can use a CC at our local cc college for no additional fee so we are happy to do so (and collect the 1% benefit for doing so!). But at my daughter’s 4 year uni, using a CC incurs an additional fee, so we pay that bill by check.

Every school is different so there is no blanket rule that can be applied here.
