Credit cards, credit ratings and general frustration!

We have two Capital One CC’s. One has been upgraded to a chipped version. There was a second layer of protection added at that time. I’m the primary on the card. H and two kids are authorized users. We all had the same account number but different security codes. When the chipped card arrived, each authorized user had a completely different account number. In some ways this is great. If one card gets lost we don’t all have to wait for a replacement. It’s easier to audit who spent what at the end of the month since charges are listed by account numbers. BUT, if I purchase something and ask H to return it he may run into problems because his number is different - even though it’s the same master account.

Capital One has not upgraded our second card - where H is the primary. This one rarely gets used and is just a travel spare. They refuse to give me a date. I think I will call it in as ‘lost’ and see if the replacement has a chip.

I also heard that Barclays issues a true chip and pin card with no foreign transaction fees.

Here’s a list of supposed true chip and PIN cards with no foreign transaction fees.

Some American Express cards have foreign transaction fee. This is why I don’t use them overseas.

What is up with Capital One? We’ve had a chip card with them for at least 2 years and we didn’t ask for it.

Maybe it depends on the specific Capital One product. They have so many cards and co branded cards it might only be available for some of them.

I have Andrews FCU card and can confirm that it is a real Chip and PIN card. Worked everywhere in Europe but still did not work in Paris Metro ticketing machines. In transactions with a human present it defaults to signature but in unattended transactions it asks for PIN.

We have a Capital One Visa and they recently sent us new cards with a chip.

Our kids also have a Money debit card from Cap One 360, it’s a master card.
They sent S a new one with a chip the other day, D did not get hers yet.
