When Drew University rose in this year’s rankings by U.S. News & World Report, the school’s president says his first question was, “What did we do wrong?”</p>

<p>Robert Weisbuch has been an outspoken foe of the rankings, which many students cling to in their zeal to get into the hottest schools. Drew hit No. 63, up from No. 69 last year, in the list of the “best liberal arts” colleges. (There’s a separate list for national universities.)</p>

<p>“There’s not a single serious social scientist who accepts the U.S. News rankings as good research,” Weisbuch says from his office in the heart of the leafy Madison campus. “Those of us who lead institutions of higher learning have a certain responsibility to help people wise up rather than dumb down.”
