I don’t know the poster who suggested TABS, but I can say many Boarding Schools have summer programs that are similiar in content to CTY, but longer in length. Exeter has a program that I have heard extremely good things about. The students who attend are gifted.

I am familiar with the CAA and CTY sites in PA and NY. The CAA, CTY and “baby” CTY programs are strictly mointored. With the exception of JHU, many of the sites appear “hand-picked” to offer a nicely compressed campus with easy, grassy walk from dorm to class to dining. Even Dickinson (Carlisle, PA) with the “road” through campus is a cozy place and the road is residential. Most sites are within less than an hour to major medical hospital. There is little “free” time and little time without an RA/TA monitoring whereabouts. This is the chief complaint – older teens feel smothered by the supervision.

My son’s friend needed the ER 2 summers ago during CTY. An RA accompanied him in the ambulance; an older staff member followed by car; parents were contacted immediately, but told they needn’t come; CTY staff and hospital staff spoke to the parents often during the episode. Kid had brittle bones and broke an ankle.

My son at the Carlisle campus forgot to get his morning medication and the nurse showed up 15 minutes into his class to bring it to him.

The downside of CTY is that the kids a rigidly scheduled and no internet – It is difficult to connect and speak to your kid or hear from them. A text a morning or each evening kept me calm.
