Current Babysitting Rates?

My 17 year old son doesn’t babysit but he does tutoring in math for $15/hr and could probably charge more. We live on the westside of LA.

I wouldn’t think a babysitter would earn as much per hour as a certificated teacher. Maybe half.

These posts confirm what my D told me. She was used to being paid on average $15/hour and was sorely disappointed to hear that the going rate in her college area was closer to $7.

How much would private lessons be in your area? Say for piano or academic tutoring? (by a college student)

Lessons are more in the $10./per half-hour range here (twice that if the lesson teacher is an experienced adult), but that’s for a half-hour of full attention to the kid.

D is an MM student and charges $65-75 for a 45 minute voice lesson. When a parent asked her to keep an eye on her 13 yr old for an hour after the lesson D said it would be an additional $65 since that’s how much her time costs. That is what the lady paid. (but hey, that’s Beverly Hills for ya)

PG - She’s looking at both scenarios, but it could include regular after school care with driving to activities, and the foreign language aspect - much like an au pair. I would tend to agree that the watching movies in the house after the kids are in bed should be compensated differently than driving, full-engaged, helping with homework kind of position.

Whew, musica, excellent! I should move there…

I reminded my D that there are plenty of wealthy people who do not value what they do not pay a lot of money for. If it had been a neighbor or a friend she probably wouldnt have been so mercenary.

My son, a HS student, gets paid $40/hour for Math tutoring.

^ Wow!
Tutoring would also be an option. She had done some ACT tutoring as a favor for friends of the family, and has peer tutored at the community college, but the going rate there is minimum wage :(

In college town, midwest, my daughter usually makes about 10 per hour for babysitting, but those are the relatively affluent folks–professors, veterinarians. When she watches the dev. disabled child of a single mother with major health problems, she asks for far, far less.

I suspect those who are babysitting for less affluent people do not come close to 10/hr.

My daughter charges $50/hr in NJ area for tutoring. People ask for her whenever she is home from college. It works out pretty well because most kids have their midterm in Jan and finals in June. She’ll organize their study material and intense review over 2 weeks. Parents are happpy because they feel like they have done their part ($$), kids are happy to get spoon fed, and D1 goes back to school with a fat wallet.

D1 babysat once in high school, got paid $10/hr for 5 kids (she signed up for 2), and never again.
