Cut the Cord: Live TV Streaming

We cut the cord almost 3 years ago. When we moved last fall, we originally signed up for cable and internet from Comcast because the price was good and we weren’t sure what reception we’d have for local channels with our indoor antenna. We were so used to not having cable that we really only watched the channels we had watched on Sling anyway & we discovered that our indoor antenna worked great, so within a few weeks we cancelled cable again and went back to Sling.

I can’t imagine ever going back to cable.

Yes ^. I didn’t know quite how to word that, @TiggerDad. Verizon kept telling me how great they are because I couldl get some 1 year deal on 150 or more mbps, but for heaven’s sakes, I’m not downloading NASA size files. (I’m on 100 because they upgraded me fom 50, at no cost, several years ago.)

Yes to the free Roku (I got the AirTV interface, but bought a Roku for the other TV at Best Buy, deep on sale, maybe $19.)

I had been watching these theads so long, unable to quite make the leap, unwilling to wrap my head around this technology, for a long while. Once I jumped, I realized it’s a no-brainer. Rather than try various services, I inventoried the stations I want and who ofered the most of those. I gave up one (which later showed up on Sling. Progress happens.)

@rockymtnhigh2 Does Spectrum offer you the streaming choice in post #90?

For us that package would be $25 for the first year or two. No idea what it might go up to. For $33, I’d just spring the extra $7 and get YouTube TV. You still would save a bunch.

^ No, spectrum choice not offered here.

When our prices kept going up up up…we were also receiving mail about service for new customers at a small fraction of what we were paying. Can’t I agile why they send that stuff to current customers. We tried unsuccessfully to get our rates reduced a number of times…and then we just cut the cord.

Of course. Within days of quitting cable…we started getting “we want you back” offers that we’re really cheap.

Idiots…if they had offered us those reduced rates, which we asked for, we would not have cancelled.

We will NEVER go back to cable. Never. Never. I can’t stand the packages and the horrible customer service. Just horrible.

When I visited a local Xfinity office recently to return all the boxes for TV’s, I asked the customer representative why is the company treating the new customers with better deals than the loyal customers who’ve been with them for many years, he just shrugged in full agreement. When I asked him whether the company is taking any hints from the success of Sling TV in recent years to also go “a la carte” style themselves rather than continuing to offer a bunch of junk channels that the customers don’t consume, the representative said that they’re planning on doing the same except that the a la carte packaging is going to be by “genre.” I said, okay, good luck with that.

One thing that did rouse my interest while there was their mobile plans. Basically, Xfinity is piggybacking on Verizon towers for mobile coverage, so the coverage should be reliable even if the coverage priority goes to the Verizon’s customers. Their plans are much cheaper than the Verizon’s since they don’t charge whatever the hell “line access fee” is – $20 per line just for having a smartphone. For four of us, that’s $80 right there for this pure nonsense.

Unfortunately, as of now, there are only limited iPhone models that they can transfer over to their plans from Verizon. Unfortunately, only my older son’s iPhone qualifies while the rest three of us own Samsung phones so cannot cross over. The representative said that most likely within a year, they’re going to be able to transfer some Samsung models, as well. So, we’re going to wait and see. I like Verizon’s excellent coverage performance, but I’m not going to “donate” any more money than I have to. T-Mobile’s coverage in my area is horrendous, so that’s not an option.

Verizon is super reliable in our area, so I’m ok with basic web function. But next to everything else about them annoys the bejesus out of me. Including their stupid upside down envelopes.

Verizon cell is somehow riding on some or all of Sprint, as is a chunk of ATT cell. That’s separate from the oopid Fios issues- they package those plans to satisfy the networks that pay for being available, expose those to a wide audience. Bet you it’s a long time before Verizon offers a truly customer-oriented option.

Yikes to high costs. When our Frontier (they took over Verizon in Florida) contract ended the bill for TV + internet (paying less than $5 for Ooma phone) the bill would have gone up almost $50 for the middle package to $200. Switched to Spectrum (they replaced highly regarded Brighthouse) Silver, kept Ooma and pay under $120 all costs per month. Could do less service but will wait until I don’t want my cable shows and do want the other subscriptions. Using the internet Spectrum capabilities and Roku devices have other TV’s going. Get more channels than with Frontier as well.

How can you tell if an indoor antenna will work for local channels while you have cable? I’d hate to stop Cable, then find out it doesn’t work well.

Locast might work for some. Read about it here–

@conmama

All you have to do is to unplug the cable that connects to either the TV cable box or the back of your TV to disable your cable TV provider’s feed. Then, connect the TV antenna’s cable to your TV and scan for local channels. If you don’t like the result, then return the antenna for full refund.

When I was shopping for a TV antenna, I initially got an RCA brand. Then, I noticed that a local Sam’s Club was selling the popular Mohu brand with 2-for-1 pricing at $59, which is the same price that Best Buy sells at except for one unit. So I gave it a try, and what a difference! Mohu picked up about a dozen more channels in spite of the fact that it’s placed hidden away behind the TV. I promptly returned the RCA antenna.

@TiggerDad: How much do you charge per hour?
