I had a UTI with major bleeding 1.5 years ago. Negative for bacteria. The antibiotics in the ER made it substantially better within an hour. Urologist did a CT scan for stones or bladder cysts, as well as a cystoscopy (no big deal, just a weird, quick test). In future, I will see a female urologist. The guy I saw was offensive on multiple levels.
They found a pancreatic tumor on the CT scan, completely unrelated to the bladder issue.
@CountingDown - Crappy that the doctor was offensive when you are already dealing with a “personal” issue, so to speak. I specifically went to a female urologist.
Hope the pancreatic tumor was not of concern and that you are ok.
I was going to mention that when they did the UT scan they also saw my ovarian cysts since the scan covered that part of my body also. I knew about the cysts (have had them on and off for many years).
@Countingdown, the first time I had a UTI was when I was at college. I had never heard anyone talk about those kind of symptoms before (girls often talked about yeast infections, but I knew this wasn’t it). I went to see a doctor at student health. About six months later, I had another one and went back to the health center. The same doctor asked me “Is this a SEX thing???” I had absolutely no idea what he was talking about and felt embarrassed and judged.
Of course, I now know that sex can play a part in causing UTI’s - as can wearing really tight jeans, using harsh bubble bath, wiping back to front, wearing underwear that traps moisture, among other things.
I’m now a lot more assertive than I was back then. I should have given him a piece of my mind!!!
I also had my first UTI in college, with bleeding, and was absolutely terrified. I thought I had some sort of terrible, deadly disease because of the blood. No problems with the student health service, fortunately… but I definitely made sure to tell my daughter about UTIs when she was a very young teen. She knew exactly what to do when the inevitable happened. That is pretty near the top of my list of “things I wish my mother had told me.”
@dwhite, the pancreas guy “didn’t see” the tumor when he did the endoscopy, though it was on the CT scan. Four radiologists who did see it gave me enough ammo to get another opinion and endoscopy. It was not in a place where they could biopsy it, but it hadn’t grown and the second doc said it looked OK. Took six months of hell to get an answer. The original pancreas doc gave my primary a “halfhearted apology” when the primary called him out on his inattention to detail.
I can only hope that the urologist felt chastened and humbled when he had to call me 20 minutes after being offensive and dismissive to report that the first radiologist had found a tumor.
