D1 Recruitment as an international student from England

I don’t know if UNC-C would have a spot left on their roster. I really didn’t realize they were that strong of a soccer school. Living in NC UNC-C is a good school but does not compete with UNC-Chapel Hill or some of the other major NC schools academically or athletically. It is a very good school, just not a top school worldwide.

They cannot engage in conversation regardless of who initiates.

The assumption is that an athlete on a gap year will train of course. I know instances of D1 coaches arranging for the PG year, either because they needed a redshirt year, or English wasn’t up to par (not an issue here, of course). My guess is a soccer player would probably be better off training club in England than in a high school in the US, but that is speculation since it’s not the sport I am familiar with.

(I’m going off OPs statement that he is a high level player - which may or may not be misguided)

Maybe George Mason? That’s more the level I thought UNC Charlotte’s soccer team was.

They don’t have to be a top d1 soccer program to be finished recruiting at this point. Recruiting trickles down from the most desirable programs (including desirable academically) to the middle of the pack, where UNC Charlotte is, to weaker d1 programs and also strong d3 ones, mid d3 and then finally weak d3. For next fall, really (to generalize) only weak d3 programs have roster spots at this point.

That makes sense. And I will bow out of talking about things I know nothing about.

Keep in mind that some players plan to transfer over the summer, so rosters you currently see online may look different come August 2024. There could be holes that need filling at all levels.

Honestly, I didn’t plan that going to the US to be my first option however personal things happened and it is now the route I need and want to take

What or who do you think I would need to be able to do it for a top D1 program which is above average academically?

Just to mention i am currently 17 and will be 18 in the fall of 2024 in case that changes anything

Answer the questions I posted above and we’ll be better placed to help you!

What are your predicted A Level grades and subjects?
What major (course) do you want to study at college?
Which team (or level) are you playing at in the UK (e.g. Brighton U-18s, County Squad, FA Schools)? Have you been at a football academy?

I was meant to go on trial at West Ham at the u16 level however that broke down due to personal reasons regarding my coach. I don’t know if this puts in context the level of player I am.

I don’t think a school like Duke for example is realistic for a scholarship soccer slot for August. When you have been speaking with coaches, have you or they raised the idea about reclassing to 2025?

My budget would be max around 9k per academic year however I don’t think I would qualify for need-based financial aid

Not really, how would about reclassing to class of 2025

That’s a huge ask. Duke (to take one example) like many private schools costs nearly $90K and I doubt that many men’s soccer players are even getting full tuition awards, most probably 1/4 to 1/2 tuition. Even full tuition at a public college won’t get you to $9K.

I expect coaches have many players at your skill level that are full pay, and hence don’t take up much of their scholarship budget. All you can do is keep talking with coaches and go from there.

What kind of reaction have you gotten from the coaches to whom you’ve sent your video?

I see it probably wouldn’t be possible to play D1 this year but how would I go about reclassing to the class of 2025?
