D26 EA/admit after deferral chances, 3.75 UW/4.0 W/ 1210 sport management [MA resident, <$30k without loans]

I see that she wants to do sports management. Does she want or can she play D1 in her sport? What sport is it?

@indysceptic She plays tennis competitively but wants to play club if D1. My son was so much easier b/c he was a top D1 recruit in his sport. I didn’t even look at his college application haha.

@tsbna44 I will check out West Virginia. Louisville may be out because the surrounding area is a little sketchy and it is a high commuter population, from what I’ve read.

We will be discussing the business major/sport minor.

I wouldn’t define Louisville as sketchy. It is a city though so that has city things (crime, etc.) but you can say the same of LSU / Baton Rouge - nice campus but close to the city and Louisville (subjective as it’s just an opinion) is way better than Baton Rouge - outside of the schools - but comes with great things nearby - downtown, airport, fantastic zoo, amusement park (Kentucky Kingdom) etc.

Per the school, 64% of first year live on campus. I’m sure it’s a local-ish crowd - but most schools will be - less so at flagships in the south (Louisville isn’t the South, btw - it just is labeled as such). The other choice would be UK but it’s $50K with $8K merit ($42K for tuition, room and board) which is over budget - especially when adding books, transport, personal. Has a degree in Sports Leadership

Geographic diversity will be minimal at Louisville - it’s 3rd party from College Factual but 82% in state. U Kansas 60%. WVU 46%. LSU 82%.

A popular and prolific Masters in Sports Management school is Ohio U (hard to get to). It’s got a BS too - and is another - like Miami, Bowling Green, Central Michigan, Marshall etc. - lower level D1. It’s about $41K for tuition, room and board. They have OOS merit and note 99% of kids get aid (I guess need or merit) at an average of $9K but they don’t have a table (like a KU).

Add to the ā€œbigā€ school experience - in addition to added WVU, don’t forget Texas Tech (mentioned earlier) which is likely easier to get to from Mass (Southwest to Dallas and then a short hop).

Sorry for so many names - but I’m budget conscious (without loans).

I would pass on FSU unless the SAT comes up to 1430+. OOS acceptance is below 20%. It would only be affordable with the OOS tuition waiver. S21 graduated and loved it there but it’s gotten very competitive. PSU would also be too expensive.

Look at Louisville, Kentucky and WVU. Maybe Ohio U.

While I agree OP isn’t getting in ( they know too but love the school so wanna try) - direct costs - so tuition, room and board - are $34k OOS.

Probably not in their thought process but go overseas the first year and get in state tuition.

I’d take another look at James Madison. Nothing wrong with a broader program; the focus for her will be internships anyway. But they should meet your cost requirements without aid, and it is driveable from Mass. Big sports programs there and has become popular with northeasterners.

East Carolina is a large school with Div 1 teams, had some football success, and is an hour outside Raleigh.

If you do visit Louisville, Cincinnati is nearby. Pittsburgh on the way if you drive. Compact city campuses for both. Pro + college sports. SUNY-Buffalo does not draw many from out-of-state, they may meet your price.

East Carolina is a great choice - OP don’t be fooled by the word recreation - they have a Sports Management concentration. It’s about $36K tuition, room and board. The scholarships aren’t auto but if you get one, it’s another coup - and they have nice sports…like others mentioned above, lower level D1.
