As others have said, a lot depends on school and conference. Your junior needs to be building relationships now, and ask for phone calls to discuss the process/next steps. For NESCACs, coaches will begin gathering the pre-read info. (test scores, senior year schedule, transcripts, resume, etc.) in late Spring/June of junior year. Many top recruits will get offers (if pre-read is positive) on or shortly after July 1st. My daughter (field sport) was told by the coach of her top choice (NESCAC) that if pre-read was positive, she would be called with an offer on 7/1 and she was. But there was a lot of back and forth emails and phone calls leading up to the pre-read, so your athlete needs to build those connections now. Offers with coach support are typically in exchange for athletes applying ED1, so the athlete really needs to visit the schools, and do their research.
100%. In our experience coach use of the questionnaires is hit or miss so always follow up with an email.
For swimming, we are learning that the best approach is to fill out the online recruiting questionnaire and send an email immediately thereafter. We had a coach contact S25 immediately after submitting the online form and before the email, and another reply to the email and ask to submit the online form (which S25 had done).
It’s shocking to me how many coaches (across all sports) say they have no idea where the online questionnaire info goes. Hence the need for email contact…all coaches have email.
Also super important to email all coaches… you never know who is reading those emails. Best practice is also to stick to a single chain.
In addition, probability not an issue for @sinkor_swim since we are on the other side of the summer, but I encourage to check online for the listed coaches regularly. Assistant coaches often handle recruiting communications and there is huge turnover in post season/summers. By staying aware of comings and goings not only we were able to maintain communication at a given school but also to quickly gain traction at new schools by leveraging the already existing relationship.
