It was a joke attacking [bold] Asian stereotypes [/bold], not Asians. There’s a difference you know.

UHH, I think regardless of whether an article is “poorly-written” or “witty and clever,” intentionally “poking fun at the Asian population” would cause outrage either way.

But as I have stated before, they weren’t “poking fun at the Asian population,” they were poking fun at the Asian stereotype.

(To clarify, I mean “Asian stereotype” as the view of people whom hold the stereotypical Asian portrayal as true. Some people seem to be confusing the term “Asian stereotype” as though I am speaking about people whom share Asian stereotype characteristics.)

No, actually it was a joke attacking Asians, using stereotypes. The joke was obviously attacking Jian Li and his race, as a (poorly staged) comedic comeback to Jian Li’s lawsuit aimed at the university.

I disagree. Racial jokes are made everyday. Look at the movie Borat. That didn’t cause riots in the streets, because it was humorous and made in (somewhat) good taste. It’s a stereotype that Asians study a lot. If you poke fun at an Asian buddy “how many days since you’ve seen sunlight?” in a lighthearted manner, no one is going to start calling you a racist. It’s when the joke goes too far and is made in bad taste that makes us start to think that maybe the author’s intent wasn’t just to poke fun at Asians but wants to maliciously attack Asians based on race. Like I said before, I don’t think that was the author’s actual original intent, but the article comes across that way because of the way it’s written.

I’ve already addressed this earlier, so I’m not going to bother retyping everything:

It may not have caused riots in the streets, but “humorous” and “good taste” is your personal opinion. The reaction towards Borat always seemed lie in the extremities. People I talked to either loved it and thought it was hilarious or hated it and called it blatantly racist.

i have finally read the article, and seriously it was just a humor thing…i don;t think the article was even directly attacking asians but rather the character of that one applicant, which i seriously think should just put his head down in shame…i mean who would sue the school for rejecting him/her…that person doesn;t deserve to go anywhere… because of him, stereotypical images like that occur. Stereotypes exist for one reason because stereotypes do depict the majority of that population of race/ethnic/w/e as being exactly what the stereotyping depicts…and seriously i have seen asians like that exactly depicted in the article so it is not exactly untrue that some asians are exactly like that…
wow i’m asian also…atleast i admit some parts of the stereotypes are true and apply to the general population of asians.
I think that person really deserve that humor column against him

This is pretty funny, for all those getting offended, firstly, it’s sad that you sould get offended from anything that’s written AS A JOKE in an article. To be honest, I’m not asian, but if they wrote about African-Americans, Hispanics, White people, who cares? If you can’t laugh about your own races stereotypes, you really are sad. Do you deny that these are asian stereotypes? In my calc and chem classes the majorities of the students are asian. I make fun of them all the time for a ton of stuff, they don’t care because they know it’s a joke, and they come back at me with some funny things also. When a racist joke is written or spoke, there really isn’t any definition of good taste. You don’t have to like it, but to get upset is simply absurd.

I agree with the people who are annoyed at the categorization of Asians as Asians. It’s flatly annoying. Many Asian races hate each other (see Japanese and all the people they abused during WW2).

Whatever, if the racism gets out of hand I always have the option of going back to China. Too bad for the Chinese-Americans who don’t have such an option; of course China will let you return if you have something of value to contribute to us (i.e. scientific or business expertise).

You clearly haven’t stepped foot outside the United States. Go to places where they hate Americans and listen to some of the stereotypes they have. It’s not pretty.

Of course, your response to that is that you’ll come back here. But Asian-Americans have no place to go, America IS their country, not China/Japan/Korea/whatever. This is why they are so ****ed when people are racist; they can’t go anywhere and are stuck dealing with it.

the japanese did everything they did in ww2 with as much conscious as their enemies would have done if given the chance…it was war…you cannot possibly expect civilians to not get harmed
edit: returning to china…communism…seriously i just can;t picture anyone going to china…
edit: compucomp…was that satire you’re last comment regarding contribution lol =D

You are WRONG. WRONG WRONG WRONG WRONG WRONG. People like you are the reason that we are ****ed at Japan. You murdered millions of our people in cold blood and in grotesque ways NOT in normal warfare. You conducted massacres of villagers regularly to try to root out the Communist guerilla forces, and performed biological warfare experiments on prisoners.

Now I’m assuming you’re Japanese. If you’re actually Chinese… you are a worthless traitor and need to be shot.

Too bad you can’t picture anyone returning to China, because many people after hitting a glass ceiling in America have returned to China. The country isn’t even communist anymore.

omG it was war…i think the south suffered extreme wrongs during the civil war also and i don;t see them complaining about it O.o
lol compucomp…i like it when you said “China will let you return if you have something of value to contribute to us (i.e. scientific or business expertise)”…omG what kind of a morality is that…and the “us”…

i’m not japanese…so yea…O.o lol but japanese people are soo cool…they have achieved soo muchhh in arts and technology OMG creation of anime and great cars…but don;t worry china is known for cheap labor =D I’m sorry i kind of sound a bit bitter but it is exactly people like you who make chinese/taiwanese people look bad…sterotypes exist b/c people w/ those characteristics exist
edit: i like the part where you say “you are a worthless traitor and need to be shot” O.o =/ i’m lucky i’m in america in which i can actually say w/e i want lol =D
and no it is still partially communist look at your government O.o

darkhope,
Jian has stated that he is happy at Yale and that he IS NOT suing because he got waitlisted, rather he’s upset that race is a factor in the admissions process.

If anything, he breaks the mold by his willingness to speak out. That in itself should prove that he’s far from the stereotypical “Asian math grind.” He’s perfectly happy at Yale, and Princeton’s not going to accept him even if he wins. He has everything to lose and nothing to gain from this, so I think it’s more likely that he’s doing this out of a belief in his cause rather than spite for Princeton.

Edit: Not to downplay the stuff the South suffered… but how can you compare that to systematic rape, torture, and pillaging?

The article clearly shows racism against Asians in bright daylight. And I think the Indian student, editor of the newspaper has racial inferior complex when he tries to defend the author of the article. When Larry Summers, Harvard ex-president had a sincere but wrong observation about the ability of women in mathematics, the entire Harvard faculty voted no confidence in him. Where are the intellectuals at Princeton? Although the paper was not published by Princeton University, it should be condemned by the intellectual body trying to sell diversity to attract elite students. This is a lot worse than Mel Gibson’s Anti-Semitic remarks a few months ago when he was drunk. But Mel Gibson dares to ask the Jewish community to forgive his mistake. And we have not heard the official apology from the Princeton intellectuals yet.
