The AP covered this:

my favorite quote:

Previous Handsome Dans have created quite a legacy: One inspired a Cole Porter song. Another graced the cover of Sports Illustrated. Nearly all have hobnobbed with politicians. One performed for President George H.W. Bush, a Yale alum, playing dead at the question, ‘‘Would you rather go to Harvard or die?’’

Mugsy outperformed nine other would-be mascots Tuesday in a competition that had the dogs strut in front of a blaring band, tackle a stuffed Princeton tiger, and maul a Harvard crimson blanket.

Some were ruled too chubby. Others too timid. A panel of judges found Mugsy athletic enough to carry one of the most storied monikers in sports.

‘‘It’s folklore. It’s pride. It’s tradition,’’ said Roy E. Yarbrough, a school mascot historian in Pennsylvania. '‘Yale has a leg up on everybody.’"

I kinda chuckled at the thought of some sort of deranged dog show where the contestants are judged on how ferociously they tear apart a stuffed cantab. haha
