Dang—car is really dying! Time to replace

OK, looks like we are buying our Prius Prime with an extended 10 year warranty (battery warranty only 8 years) plus special coating on the car and seats (light colored seats–MOONBEAM). We are only getting $600 for the trade in of our 2000 Toyota Sienna, but at least it will be their vehicle to dispose of, not ours (probably will be sold at auction). After the federal tax rebate, we will pay just under $33,000.

Would an extended warranty on a Toyota Prius be worth the money, given the Toyota Prius’ past excellent reliability record?

Also, extended warranties not from the car company itself (i.e. Toyota) have a poor reputation of actually paying (or even staying in business long enough to be able to pay claims).

The finance guy at Toyota says that the warranty company (Allstate) will pay Servco Toyota in Hawaii to make the repairs–all of them. If I have any problems, I can just call the dealership and they will intercede on my behalf. He hasn’t had any trouble getting paid. I think given the computers in the Prius Prime, it’s well worth the money and H who has had a 45 year career in computers thinks so too. I have had extended warranties on cars 3 times–we always got out money’s worth! I think a 10 year warranty on electronics is a very good thing. The normal warranty is only 3 years–extending it to 10 years was another $2007.

OK, looking to cancel the extended warranty they were trying to sell me and buying the official Toyota extended warranty from a dealer in MA instead of the inflated-price the dealer was trying to sell it to me for in Honolulu. The State Farm Policy they were selling for 10 years or 100,000 miles (whichever comes first) is $2007 + tax from HI. The MA one for Toyota is under $1400, plus there’s no middleman to fight with to get servicing (such as State Farm). This seems MUCH better to me.

I do not know about Toyota. With my non Toyota brand’s extended warranty issued by the manufacturer, only OEM parts are used whereas non manufacturer issued EW does not.

I prefer one fight over two and rather have everything with Toyota if I’m buying TOYOTA car. Somehow, with a 3rd party company, i always envision them pointing at each other or you while you pay the bill.

Just picked up our new Toyota Prius Prime. Ultimately, I was persuaded to buy the 10 year no deductible extended warranty at dealership. They will fix anything that goes wrong in next 10 years, no deductible and Allstate will just pay them by CCard.

I am very happy—D is thrilled as she believes she will likely take over the car when she eventually moves home (very likely). We will likely just get another vehicle. Probably won’t move her 2009 S40 Volvo home.

The car is very quiet and gets excellent mileage! The wipers turned themselves on and off when it started raining on the drive home!
