@AboutTheSame Thank you so much- very excited for all the amazing opportunities available for my daughter!
@Shrmpngrtz @AboutTheSame Thanks and thank you! We are so excited for D2 and canât wait to visit her in Hanover. We live in flyover country and arenât familiar with New England so the tips are greatly appreciated (especially the restaurant ones!)
Since Thursday, Iâve gone through the 135 pages of the parents thread and am so appreciative of the tips/advice I found. I feel like I have a better grasp of the campus vibe, too. I am SO excited for my daughter and the experiences she will have.
Dartmouth '18 here. Congratulations to all the ED '22s and welcome to the Big Green!
Iâve been following the CC threads on Dartmouth this year out of curiosity and wanted to add some perspective as a current student. While it is exciting to be part of this wonderful community, both newly admitted and prospective RD students should be aware that Dartmouth is also very intense - in every sense of the word. Here are some experiences I have had, representative of what your child may encounter:
- Among my friends, one got an A in Special Relativity as a freshman and another is graduating a term early with a masters in Pure Math.
- A Rockefeller helped me check out my library book.
- There is a CS course on supercomputers next term because Dartmouth managed to get IBM to loan us Watson for the winter.
My point is, make sure your child readies him- or herself after the initial celebrating. There will be a lot of experiences ahead, both humbling and amazing to the point of being absurd. Congrats again to EDs and good luck to RDs!

I always used the gas station right in the middle of Logan. (also a chance to pick up Dunkinâ one last time!)

Exit 38 had cheaper prices.
One other tip. If possible, make arrangements when you are on campus to meet up with other parents from this thread. It was really fun to get to know the other parents, and we met up several times over the years our kids were there.
Donât overlook the possibility of flying into Manchester.
Other area restaurants enjoyed by our family are The Tucker Box in White River Junction and The Norwich Inn in Norwich. We also ate at Jewel of India quite often, because we love Indian food. (We ended up in Hanover quite often, because we drove S to campus numerous times. We live about 3 hours away. And then, after a couple of years away, he lived and worked in the area.)
Simon Pearce is the best for a significant meal, hands down. Especially for graduation.
Stellaâs in Lyme is a great place, and a nice drive from Hanover. And I agree about The Norwich Innâitâs charming, close to Hanover, and has a good menu. We usually eat in the âpubâ section.
Our son heads to Paris tonight, and then on to Lyon, to start a term abroad. Weâre very excited for him! We just visited Hanoverâit was very cold and beautiful.
Congrats to all the new admits and families. An amazing College.
Consolation: I agree about The Tuckerbox. Lovely food experience, and great coffee.
Aloha parents, yes it was nice to meet some of the parents on this thread during our visits to Campus 2010-14. Congratulations to the new parents on the block. My 2 children (now adults) had great experiences at Dartmouth, and we felt fortunate to be part of the ride from afar.
@Mirmark , my S spent the year following graduation in Lyons, at the ENS. It was a thingâkind of a fellowship?âgiven by the French dept. During the Spring term, he had a job âbabysittingâ the late-elementary-school-age son of the professor who was running the LSA. (Great thing for him because he desperately needed a job! And loved the kid.
) He had an interesting time there. Much great food. Tell your S to check out the fromageries and charcuteries.
S did the French FSP in Paris, and enjoyed it enormously.
Hey thanks Consolation! Our son is very happy with his LSP+ so farâheâs got an amazing host familyâŠright off the main plaza in Old Lyon, so he has about a mile walk to campus and crosses two rivers through the heart of Old Lyon. Weâre thrilled for him. We booked a trip to visit him in France in Februaryâwe did this in the summer and just now are realizing that heâs on break that week, and might prefer traveling with his friends. Oh wellâif the worst case is a trip to France without seeing our son, thatâs not so badâand of course weâll do our best to track he and his friends down in Europe for a dinner or something!
Hey parents, more restaurant news:

I hope it works out better, food-wise, than the sale of the Canoe Club! I think that bartender and his investors need some kitchen advice.
D2 will have to travel in October for a wedding. I suppose she could take the Hanover coach Thursday night after class to Boston, stay overnight in a hotel, and then catch an early Friday flight out of Logan airport. Is flying out of Manchester any easier these days?
Not sure about Manchester but my daughter has used CapeAir out of Lebanon several times. Worth looking in to, depending on where sheâs goingâŠ
I seem to recall that further on up this thread, there were some posts about options to get to Manchester were not there a few years back. I guess it depends on how easy the final destination is to reach from Manchester versus Logan. We put D up at the airport hotel (the one connected to the terminal) one time when she needed to take an early flight out the next morning.
@sdteak Our daughter has spent the past 3 years flying in and out of Manchester only. We have been very happy with the cost and choice of airlines to get her where she needs to go.
Thanks for the replies!
