Dartmouth Parents Thread

College has put out the following:
UPDATE (12:35 PM): In consultation with Hanover Police Department, we are lifting the shelter in place. The HPD have responded to all related reports in the area and found nothing to indicate shots occurred in those locations.
We have no further information from the HPD to share at this time. We will continue to update the website as information becomes available.

Hi, so happy to be a Dartmouth parent (23!)- Can someone explain logistics/timing for moving in kids for trips/orientation if they are not from the northeast? Do you go before the trip or send the kid to the trip and then meet when they get back for move in? School starts 9/16 next year so if anyone can guesstimate a schedule for moving a kid in for orientation and trip I’d appreciate it-- not even sure what the timeline looks like, and how many days is orientation etc. (It’s super early to be asking but just looking for an idea?) Thanks so much!

@taliecharley The First Year Trips are staggered, with trips A-D for students in the Northeast who will return home after their trip. Students on trips E-J have access to their dorm room before leaving. They can drop bags, but are not supposed to set up the room. I chose to travel with my daughter prior to her trip, primarily because she could not make it to campus in time for the trip check in between 2-4 pm. We arrived the night before, stayed in a hotel, got her key in the morning, did some shopping, then she met up with her trip. I know many people sent their child solo, then joined them on campus after the trip. There are some events for parents during orientation. My daughter did not miss us after her trip – she loved spending time with her new friends from her trip once they returned to campus.

Here is the link for first year trips, but the dates are not available yet. My guess is the A trips will start around August 21 or 22, so that all trips will be finished prior to orientation: https://outdoors.dartmouth.edu/firstyear/calendar.html

Also, here is last year’s schedule of pre-orientation activities. These events were for the students who had returned from their trips and were on campus prior to orientation which started on Sept. 5, 2018:

@SlowLorises, awesome info, thanks so much. So if orientation started 9/5 for classes that began 9/12 last year, can I guesstimate that next year orientation will start 9/9 for classes that begin 9/16? And trips for students that do not return home (E-J) sometime up to 5 days before, up to the latest 9/3 or 9/4?

Aloha and welcome aboard. Congrats taliecharley on the acceptance of your kid. We had to ship our kid from the middle of the Pacific Ocean, so the College set him up for the late trips, maybe G-J, and he was able to drop his stuff off in his dorm and leave for his trip and return in time for all the orientation events. We tagged along and visited NH and Maine while he was out on his trip. Time flies so enjoy the ride.

We are from the west coast. Similar to Magnum PI’s experience, our son got onto a very late trip, which I think the school purposely tries to do for students who live far away. My son was able to get the keys to his dorm room ahead of the trip (they are allowed to drop off their stuff but not fully unpack). I flew with him, got his stuff into his room, and while he was on the trip I went to visit east coast relatives. I drove back up to Hanover just in time to meet him after his trip, helped him move in, and then flew back home. Obviously not everyone is going to have the time to stay out there while the student is on a trip, so at least you will know that his things are already in his room and all he has to do is unpack.

Another California team here. D had been to Hanover as a rising senior for the debate programs and then as an admitted 13 to work in the programs as a member of the debate team, and that somehow made access to her room in the Choates pretty easy when she returned for trips. She came home after working that summer and then we sent her off on her own in late August. I think she had a trip in the next-to-group but had everything in her room waiting for her when she got back and we waited until then to fly out and pick up the essentials [under bed storage bins/fan/mirror] that were better bought locally. I highly recommend a redeye flight for getting there the first time, since kid can catch the first Dartmouth Coach from Logan and get to Hanover in plenty of time to find where to get key, locate room, etc.

@AboutTheSame you make a good point, with coast to coast travel you often arrive in Boston late in the day, just in time to catch the last bus to campus. But then when you get to Hanover, you need a place to stay overnight, which is a hassle especially for someone going there for the first time.

On another subject, is there a shuttle from Hanover to the airport in Manchester, NH? How do students get to and from, since there isn’t a bus service like Dartmouth Coach that goes there, to my knowledge?

There was a shuttle [called Upper Valley Rides, I think] but it went out of business – following in the footsteps [tire treads?] of a few predecessors. There is a Greyhound bus, but we never found the schedule convenient. Trying to put together two or three people for an Uber ride [not sure if Lyft is in the area] might be the best bet.

DASH Transportation took over when Upper Valley Ride shut down. We have used them for the past two years getting our daughter from Manchester to Hanover. She’s always flown into Manchester, we have no complaints about that airport or DASH. The owner has usually been the one that has driven my daughter. She’s very personable and if requested she’ll let you know once your child has been picked up and dropped off safely.

Thanks for the better information than I could provide, @saffysmum. [I should probably semi-retire, like Magnum.] Nothing showed in a quick Google search for MHT transit options, and they don’t appear to have much of a web presence or to have made the airport aware of their existence.

@AboutTheSame don’t even think about retiring! You’ve provided so much helpful information and sound advice over the years to families, mine included!
As for info on DASH, the owner Karen, as you’ve discerned, has zero social media or web presence. She relies on word of mouth from happy customers. She does quite a bit of business getting Dartmouth students to Manchester and also transports locally for one of the schools. You’d never find her if you didn’t know. I was simply lucky enough to get a referral as a customer of Upper Valley Ride to her when I called UVR to book a trip and was told they were closing at the end of the week.

Oh heck, anyone who knows me knows that I can’t shut up. :)) We never even knew about Upper Valley Rides until [I think] 2012, when they parked a van outside Murphy’s and were handing out flyers. I hope DASH can make a go of it, and posting here at CC is not a bad start. I wonder if it would help to start a transportation thread letting people know about this [and other] options, so new families would not have to search through prior threads.

@saffysmum Would you mind either posting or PM’ing me DASH’s contact information? My DS is in interview mode right now and it would be great to have the Manchester airport as an option when making travel plans with these companies.

They’re in West Leb

@b1ggreenca I’m happy to pass along the information. Dash Transportation, Karen O’Connell 603.306.7995
Ever since UVR went under we’ve been using her, roughly 2 years now. Never had a problem.

What does DASH charge?

@taliecharley Welcome! My son (also from California) flew to Boston on the red-eye and took Dartmouth coach up to campus for his trip, which was one of the last few. We met him when he returned from his trip, spent two nights together at a vacation rental finalizing his dorm shopping and doing laundry, etc
Then moved him in, spent the afternoon doing parent stuff, said goodbye to him and left the next morning.

@NorCalTootsie DASH has a rate for Dartmouth students of $125 plus optional gratuity one way. The cost is per car not per person so if there is a classmate that also is traveling at the same time the cost can be split.
