Dartmouth Parents Thread

I recall there is a Bank of America branch in Hanover.

We stayed at the Hampton Inn in White River Junction. Not bad. Includes breakfast. Hanover Inn seemed more convenient, run by the college, but pricey.

How is flying into Manchester vs. Boston? Does anyone know how easy it is for a student to get to Dartmouth from these airports?

Also, are there many rental car companies near Manchester for parents to rent a car?

Either airport works. MHT is ~one hour closer, but BOS has more convenient bus service (Dartmouth Coach does not stop at MHT, so students take Greyhound). MHT is a full service airport with all the major car rental agencies.

BOS has non-stops from the west coast, which is important for kids flying in who need to catch the last bus to Hanover.

Yes, full BofA branch ‘downtown’ Hanover – right next to the North Face store. Hanover also has a few local banks.

Manchester is a very nice airport and its a lot closer to Dartmouth. If you intend to rent a car that’s the way to go. Southwest has lots of flights into Manchester. If you need to take a bus (e.g. Dartmouth Coach) then you have to go with Boston Logan.

What are the events for parents/families on new student orientation day? What time are the parents supposed to leave?

IIRC, they kick you out about 3/4 pm because there is usually a floor meeting on move in day. Orientation runs a for quite a while (it used to be over a week).

Thanks. Will have to look into flights to both airports, rentals, etc. Do most parents go to drop off students for the Doc trips? The doc trip is before orientation. I would assume students go on their own to the doc trip, then parents go to orientation later.

Do you all send home stuff (clothes, etc.) via mail since you are flying?

Correct.

Nope. I’m flying Southwest, which doesn’t charge for checked bags.

I’m bringing a carry-on and 1 big checked bag to my DOC trip, and my parents will bring the remainder of what I need. We are not bringing anything like shampoo, soap, etc. We’ll buy it all locally because packing it is just too much of a pain.

Our student is on a DOC trip that finishes on September 15. Is there any point in coming for the orientation or would it be better to simply drop her off on September 11 at the beginning of the DOC trip? What activities are there for parents/families on orientation day? When would she get back from her DOC trip?

D asked for and got a DOC trip that finishes on the 12th. We are flying in on the 7th and dropping her off on the 8th then taking a mini-vacation ourselves returning on the 12th. We plan to bring her clothes but purchase locally the rest and help her set up her room between the 12th and 15th. I haven’t seen a schedule for orientation on the 15th and was wondering about that, too.

Don’t worry about going back for orientation! We have brought two kids up on moving day and never made it to any orientation events. Didn’t feel like we were missing anything. We moved the kid in, had lunch together and hit the road. But be sure to plan to go to the First Year Parents Weekend in the spring. Very Fun and by then you’ll be able to meet your '14’s friends, see their favorite hangouts, maybe meet a favorite prof or two.

Since we live a distance, I think that my daughter gets to stay on campus after the doc trip ends (only a few days). I work, so I will have to see.

Anyone ever use Amtrak
?

I have to give a shout-out to Manchester airport. Depending on your needs, it’s a great airport; easy to get in and out of and closer to Hanover. Traffic will be better, too, depending on time of the day.

Are students allowed to bring bed risers? Also, we’ve seen a neat looking over-the-door towel rack. Good idea, or not?

Coming from a distance, I wonder if Amtrak will let a student bring more (bag limit)?

No need to bring bed risers. The beds all have special frames that let you raise the bed as high as you like. Very handy. Most kids raise the beds high enough to fit a small fridge underneath.

I didn’t even realize that there were parent activities on move-in day! We live 3 hrs drive away, so S went on an early DOC trip and then came home for a week. We drove him over, moved in his stuff, met his roommate, helped them cruise the used furniture sale for a minifridge and set up the room, and left (taking all extra suitcases and packing stuff with us). I seem to recall some kind of set menu lunch being available.

Family weekend in the spring is great. If I were forced to pick between that and being there at move-in, I’d pick the spring weekend.

And later today we’ll be leaving for Sophomore Family Weekend, which promises to be interesting. (We may actually be allowed to see the inside of the frat house, for example. )

LAUNDRY SERVICE?
What is typical cost to wash/dry clothes? I asssume the buildings have facilites? We received a mailing to show a company provides this service. Wondered if any of your kids used it? Or is there a service in town to wash/fold clothes? It may be handy to do this, while getting used to living on their own.

^No laundry service for us. Young adults have to learn to do their own laundry sooner or later, and we took college as a good time to start.
