Just to be clear, nobody at the school gave me any advice or suggestions. They just explained about the protocol that the medical center uses to notify next of kin. I was left to draw my own conclusions and do whatever additional research I felt was necessary.
Sorry to have inserted a somber topic here - but worth checking into as parents of 18+ year-old youngsters. Now â off to purchase a cheap, secondhand âfrat coatâ!
Thank you, current and âveteranâ Dartmouth parents, for alerting me to the need for power of attorney docs. We decided to proceed, assuming it canât hurt/might help (and hopefully, will never be needed).
I wish Iâd raised the issue of insurance before allowing our D to be covered by the school plan. Too late to recoup the $$ now (sigh). Any thoughts on whether to keep her on our Humana plan, as well? Itâs not crystal clear to me how healthcare works on campusâŠ
PosAttitude: It was never that clear to me either. Dickâs house is the on-campus facility but does not, shall we say, get rave reviews. Since we stuck with out HMO, I don;t know how the college care works. You may see whether you can waive for future quarters or are stuck for the year. You can certainly waive for future years. Depending on when your open season is (assuming that weâre talking about a employment-related plan), you might want to keep her on and drop & add her back. I was always glad we had D on out plan because she tended to come down with things immediately after returning home for winter break, and it was good to be able to see her local doctor.
Gauchman: I think everyone is grateful to you for raising the issue â and our collective awareness. I know I am.
Iâve also seen advice that girls consider having a specific pair of âfrat basement shoes.â EwwwwwwâŠ
I think it depends on the house.
I think the advice is that EVERYONE should have a pair of basement shoes âŠ
My kids told me that many students by default create basement shoes after their first visit to one of those places. And parents, be advised that basement shoes are not worn anywhere else after that first visit. So maybe just let them know that it is not advisable to wear their favorite pair of expensive shoes to a Greek house party.
Sorry, not getting it. What are basement shoes and why do students need them?
Pulling up a chair and making popcorn for this explanation. ![]()
Based on the unofficial 'SHMEN GUIDE at Dartmouth (lingo guide for freshmen): âFRATTED ONâ: âWhen you walk out of a fraternity basement and into the light, you will see this brown mud covering your shoes and legs. You have officially been fratted on.â To me, âbrown mudâ is likely a mixture of many interesting ingredients - namely beer. http://www.dartmouth.edu/~shmen/dartmouthlingo.html
Oh good grief. Yuck, but better to be forewarned!
I wonder how a pair of Wellies would go over âŠ
D met up with 5 other '19s at Waffle House today for brunch. Theyâre having so much fun, itâs 3:20 and theyâre still hanging out. A very good sign.
I have a brief question I was hoping someone here could answer: Do students have their own mail boxes? I order things from Amazon all the time and was wondering how delivery would be handled while living in a dorm. Most packages donât fit in mail boxes, so Iâm curious how delivery would occur. Any info/advice? Iâm applying ED this fall.
Hey, PosAttitude, a great sign indeed.
In response to maaz97, yes you have your own âHinmanâ mailbox and mailroom, and no worries on the size of box, I shipped a bike to my student and virtually all students order things from Amazon and other on-line sources.
Any idea when we can start shipping the things we donât want to tote onto the plane? My daughter has accumulated enough coats for half of the freshman class (itâs Deep South weather paranoia) and thereâs no way weâll get 'em all in a suitcase.
Answer: You can ship to the Hinman box number youâve been assigned any time after receiving it. They will hold shipments for pickup for 2 weeks, then return to sender.
And FYI, regarding DOC trips: Dartmouth has equipment to lend (backpacks, sleeping bags, foam pads, etc) for those who donât own â and donât want to purchase â these things. Fill out the online request form at www.outdoors.dartmouth.edu. No response means it will be waiting for you when you arrive in Hanover (i.e. theyâll respond only if the items you want are no longer available).
Hope thatâs helpful!
Aloha 19âs and parents of 19âs, this article in The Dartmouth August 22 was spot on. http://thedartmouth.com/2015/08/22/peters-do-dartmouth-for-you/
It goes by much too quickly, enjoy the ride.
Found out some info that may help new 19s (and their parents):
(1) The housing office is in North Massachusetts Hall (behind Admin Blgs)
(2) Dorm keys can be picked up on the day of your DOC trip, 8am-12pm or 1-4:30pm
(3) Dartmouth student IDs are issued at the card office in the basement of FOCO (the class of 1953 Commons), 8am-4:30pm.
(4) Hinman post office package pickup is open/available 8am-5pm
(5) When shipping items to school, address them âXXXX Hinmanâ â rather than Hinman Box #XXXX â and UPS will accept and deliver them.
(6) Dining program change requests are due Sept 10th; otherwise, you will be put into Smart Choice 20 (20 meals swipes/wk and $150 DBA).
(7) Dining program becomes effective â i.e. kids can eat on campus â starting September 3rd.
Hope thatâs helpful! If you have useful info to share with others, please post.
Thanks! If I pick up any additional tidbits of info when Iâm there next week, I will also post. But yours were helpful. One question though, were the IDs picked up before the trip began, or after they return and actually move in?
