The Rijksmuseum is vast. After a few hours, we splurged for a break at the lovely cafe. Then we spent a little bit more time there… but in retrospect I wish we’d all had enough energy to stay even longer. It was good though that we had enough energy that evening for our Ann Frank museum talk / tour… and indonesian dinner. Like I said, so much to do in Amsterdam! (If hotels had been cheaper, we might have planned for 3 nights instead of 2).
I love your idea of staying put. Increasingly, I’ve come to want more “slow travel” – getting to actually be in a place and take it in rather than simply seeing all the sights. There’s a tension between doing things you know are one of a kind (van gogh museum, ann frank house) and sitting in a park, lingering at a cafe, or just wandering the streets or a food hall or flea market. One thing I have always enjoyed is going to a local sporting event. It sounds like you have called this one right!
A relatively short Uber ride away are some less traveled contemporary art museums. Both the Moco and Stedelijk Museum are well worth a visit. There are some great Indonesian restaurants close by the Stedelijk that draw a lot of local Dutch.
Watch out for lizards park😀
