Dealing with a long commute

These days an hour commute- especially in the northeast, is not that unusual. I doubt it will scare the employer if you don’t mention it as a negative.

Can you make a test drive to the office and see how the drive is? No harm in making a dry run.

S#1 , when finalizing the deal to do some initial contract work with his now full time employer, had considered discussing a per diem or travel/lodging if he had to stay over given the extremely long work hour expectations, when the commute was looking like it could be 2 hours each way in traffic. Then when we realized the actual distance was really only like 40 miles, we suggested he not bring that up AT ALL. He didnt. Was the wise choice. They might not have hired him in the first place. He/gf moved to cut the commute time significantly and he LOVES his job, has now transitioned from contract to full time employee, has a strong track record with them and now can discuss some of this stuff if need be (commute is now 45-60 min or so)

I hire for 7 different offices in NJ. When I hire for my Essex and Bergen county offices I try to hire candidates that live in the northeastern portion of the State. It is not the only factor and I would not pass on a great candidate but my experience tells me the first chance someone living outside that area will do is request to be reassigned to one of the southern offices.

Google maps is clocking the route at around 1 hr 10 minutes.

So it is more than an hour.

Do you … drive the speed limit that google estimates?? I…errr… find that I seem to get to my destinations a little sooner than google predicts…

Me too…

LOL. Google has us go by pony express!

There was one “danger” DH has run into while having a longer commute. “Oh the traffic is really bad today. Hmmm. I think I’ll stop and pick up a Starbucks or some Dunkin Donuts for the trip…” :)

When I look at resumes I have a map up on the other screen. Some employers don’t care about it at all, I’ve been burned enough over the years to not bother looking outside my ‘circle’. The other thing I have to always mention - we don’t follow school closings, you’d be amazed at how many moms assume we’ll close during our bogus school closings here. Where for the record, we’ve closed more for rain that could be snow at some point maybe, even though it’s 45 outside, than actual accumulated snow.

I’m reviewing resumes right now. Fender - please make sure you’ve looked it over for typos, I can’t believe how many typos, misspellings, and ill formatted things I get while in the cover letter they’re telling me about their attention to detail.

^^ Yep, I’m always astonished at how many poorly-written and apparently non-proofread resumes I get. Those are automatic “No” for me.

My commute is about 55 min each way in good weather. Other than during winter, it doesn’t bother me much. Of course I have to leave for work earlier and come home later than most, but that’s the price one pays with spouses working at places that are pretty far apart.

I started with Sirius/XM and found that I mainly liked the audio books. Then I decided to just go this route, initially by checking out CDs from the library, but now I almost exclusively do audio downloads with my library card that gets me books from Overdrive and OneClickDigital. My IPad connects directly to the car stereo system so I can listen directly on the car speakers.
The best thing about this for me is that I have gone through books and subjects that I would never ever have explored, such as history. I was awful in subjects involving biology, and the modern scholar series has really given me a lot of insight in this area:

Jym626, thanks for saying it for me
“Colitis” is really a vague term often used incorrectly.

Chronic stress, including long coommutes, can exacerbate ulcerative colitis and Chrohns but do not cause them.

Seconding the carpooling suggestion…even if you could find someone a couple days a week it would make a difference in time and gas and you could likely use the HOV lane if available).

If you can, make that drive during rush hour. Then think long and hard about how much stress you’ll have from bad weather driving and potential of such. Winters can be long.
