Dear Life – December CC Book Club Selection

Friday the 13th ended up being a good day :)

Happy with any of the choices, but here are my three:

The Goldfinch

The Luminaries

Night Film

The Luminaries Long, but January is a cold dull month - usually. Just right for a lengthy book.

The Good Lord Bird

The Signature of All Things

I’ve read Night Film and liked it and would reread it. **mathmom **pegs it correctly with “it sounds like a bit of a gimmick” but therein lies part of its appeal. Setting’s so well developed that NYC comes across as the main character. LOL

I wanted to read The Goldfinch till I saw the Holden Caulfield mention. I decided to look for myself and couldn’t find it but did find a suggestion to bookend it with Extremely Close and Incredibly Loud. Shudder! Dropped to #5 on my list but I will read it if chosen.

Well, that turned out to be pretty easy. I didn’t even have to take out my slide rule. The only book that appears on everyone’s list is The Luminaries, so The Luminaries it is!

I’ll start a new thread.

Thanks, Mary!

The other positive about this book group vs. my real life book group is that most of us actually read the book! We only have six women in our group - the other night two were absent, one had read the first 2/3 of the book, and one hadn’t even started it yet! So the two of us who had read it had to tiptoe a bit to discuss it. We did have a very good discussion - it just wasn’t about the book! Drives me crazy.

The book we read was by a local Western Australia author, Tim Winton. Very evocative of place - his best known book is probably Cloudstreet but I had never heard of him before I came here.

I found the first section of The Goldfinch absolutely gripping. As the book went on, I wasn’t sure if I liked the main character or not - some of his choices are ??? but I think down deep I was pulling for him.

Thanks to Mary and all who posted. I look forward to The Luminaries. “See” you on Feb. 1.

Perhaps of interest:
