Death of the stove

Really? Our oven has a convection feature we like. Don’t think the oven was $1000. Our stovetop is separate.

No suggestions but sympathy. We had a GE and weren’t unhappy with it. My SIL has a kenmore and I think it’s hard to operate but I’m sure you get used to it.

My refrigerator is doing the slow death thing, I am not looking forward to replacing it.

We just replaced 4 kitchen appliances two weeks ago. Bought a JennAir fridge and KitchenAid range, microwave, dishwasher. The stove is a gas range, so it doesn’t meet thumper’s criteria, but I will pass along something I wish we had considered in our search: burner placement. The “power burner” is on the front left, which is a bit awkward for my kitchen layout (my working countertop is on the right). The other power burner is right rear, which is really inconvenient. Why have a powerful burner in the rear, where you have to reach over a front burner to stir something? The rear burners are usually where one puts things to simmer. I never thought about this when we were shopping for the new stove/range.

I have had a gas range for 15 years now and never knew there were “power burners” vs. regular burners.

Ok…here are our choices…

 1. It will cost $200 for the clock motor not including labor…that’s NOT going to happen. So we can use the stove without the clock. Everything will work…except the clock and timer. Not a big deal.

Buy a new stove. You know…I’m thinking this is the way to go. The stove is a whirlpool we got in 1994. I think we owe IT money!

NOW just to find the perfect replacement!

I can’t speak for price difference, but convection could not be easier to use on my range and has nothing to do with using special pots ( that is induction). For convection, turn it on, and either subtract 25 degrees or 10% of cooking time from any recipe. That’s it. Very noticeable difference in evenness of cooking and moistness of food.

When I finally choose, if there is a convection oven with the right range…right price point,I will buy it. I’m looking at spending less than $700 on this stove. Clearly, I’m not looking at the top of the line!

Thumper, With your specs this is the one I’d probably get. It’s a consumereports budget best buy that tests and performs better than ranges a lot more expensive.

Highly rated GE JB705STSS is stainless and convection. More like $400 difference but still over budget.

Thanks Roshke, I found Consumer Reports frustrating because the model numbers in it did not align with those in the appliance stores. I’ll check that GE out!!

OK…I found a stove I like…I think. Whirlpool model WFE520C0AW.

I found this at a local appliance store with an outstanding reputation.

It has all the features I like. The GE stoves didn’t get good reviews in terms of stovetop cleaning. My current whirlpool is great.

Plus…I have a collection of pig salt and pepper shakers on the flat surface above the controls. The GE has a curved surface…would be like putting my pigs on a ski slope.

Where to put the collection of pig salt and pepper shakers is, of course, top priority.

:irony:

Gotta set those priorities! My little pigs are rather cute!

We will wait until the weekend to make a decision.

Looks like a nice oven Thumper. Has it been ordered?

No clue how pricing compares to your local store, but here’s what’s available online: <a href=“Google Shopping - Product not found”>Google Shopping - Product not found; (Check the link to make sure it’s giving pricing for your address, too. I forget if Google embeds locations in urls or not.)

You can always use these as a bargaining tool with your local shop.

Thumper- the color of the cooktop matters.

I have the Frig/Electrolux 5 burner. Works fine. Problem is, despite vigilance, permanent dark stains can crop up around the rings or through their centers. Makes it tough to look like a magazine kitchen. (Ha.) Sugar is a big culprit, but the repair guy said its just a liability with this sort of material. (Some of the marks also come from the underside of the surface.)

My top is dark grey with darker grey rings. I advised my friend to get an all-black top so these marks are less visible. She cooks less than I do, but hasn’t had my issue over 3 years.

I’d love to hear if others have not had this problem with another brand. We cook a lot and it’s never been that we skipped a cleaning.

Thumper, According to consumers that model gets very good to excellent marks in everything but broiling (gets a fair). If you do a lot of broiling it may be something to consider, otherwise looks like a fine choice.

Thumper - I have a whirlpool with the flat top which I love but it sits maybe 1 1/2 inches away from the wall. I would be afraid that salt and pepper shakers would fall behind it. I don’t know if that’s where they put it or the plug makes it that way. I guess I would check to make sure you can get your stove really close to the wall with that model.

Ugh…my oven must need to be calibrated. I baked for our shop today ( courtesy to customers, not to sell ) and things just aren’t cooking correctly. I tried two new recipes…I should have used the oven in the garage apt :(

Just checked… My current Whirlpool is about an inch from the wall. Pigs are fine!

Happy pigs = Happy Thumper
