To the OP…is the credit union account your son has at a location near your home? If so, you can deposit money the old fashioned way by getting some deposit slips, his account number, and walking into the credit union with a check to deposit.
Or you can mail him a check that he can deposit.
Or you can do what a lot of parents do…put a set amount for the term in his account at the start of the term, and let him know…he needs to be careful with that miney because it will NOT be replenished until the start of the next term.
Re: working and being a premed. He should be able to handle a small 5-10 hour a week job. And he should be able to work in the summers to earn spending money too.
Check to see if your bank allows financial information to financial information transfers. Then you don’t need an app - you can log into your back and initiate the transfer. My little local credit union that only has a couple branches allows this functionality. Problem is it’s not immediate - it takes 2 days or so, where the apps are immediate.
Both of our kids have had checking and savings accounts since they started working in high school. The checking accounts for minors at the local bank comes with a debit card.
Older D, a junior in college now, has a credit card to build her credit score.
Both kids are users on one of our credit cards. It’s an emergency-only type of thing, or, having them pay for things that are on us anyways.
I would definitely make sure you are somehow able to get money to him in emergencies. My son’s account was linked to one of my checking accounts, for those just in case situations. He did open a checking account with the bank at his school for everyday money. We also got him a low limit credit card with H as co-signer to use to help build up credit.
