Declaring a Bio major?

We are OOS but have a lake home in WI and have known and loved the state for 40 years. Our D is very active in life sciences, starting a HOSA chapter at her school and A student in AP physics, bio and Honors chem. UW is her target “big” school.

Given your daughter’s ties to the state, she likely has a lot to write about- what she can contribute to the community, how Wisconsin is a good fit, etc.

Good luck- if I recall correctly, she already has 3 great acceptances!

She will be compared to a competitive pool of applicants in college…when applying for competitive positions, after college, when applying to med/grad school, etc.

You have NO way to know why this student was rejected at ND. So many many well qualified applicants.

Your daughter has three fine acceptances already. What exactly are you looking for now for additional colleges. Premed, and biology are offered almost everywhere.

ETA…if your DD gets rejected…or accepted to any college, you really won’t ever know why.

And it’s January of her senior year. It’s a little late to do any more meaningful ECs…plus her applications mostly have been submitted.

If she is happy with her acceptances, why apply to more colleges now?

@edd2025 did your daughter make honors at the schools she was accepted to?

If she did, I would look into any opportunities that may be available.

adding: You indicated that she may change her major in college (this is common). Keep in mind that she may also change her mind about medical school as she explores new interests (or maybe not).

Hi @thumper1 no new schools. My questions about neuroscience and biology majors are strictly for UW-Madison which she’s applying to RD (SAT and transcript submitted last year). Thanks!

Hi @twogirls invited to apply honors at Loyola MD. Not sure how PSU and Fordham work but assume she could do that on her own. She’s in at all of her safeties, waiting on several reach/targets, and finalizing her UW-Madison (which is starting to feel like it’s tilting from target to reach) app this weekend. Thanks for all of your care and assistance!

I understand, as the gpa and scores for Wisconsin are high. What seems like a target on paper is not always a target.

The good news is that she has acceptances.

@edd2025

Would she choose Wisconsin over Fordham, a school that already accepted her with possible merit?

For medical school and other pre-health programs, students need shadowing, patient volunteering, working with people in underserved communities, possibly research, advocacy experiences, industry related experiences etc.

I think there would be plenty of accessible opportunities at Fordham (note: students enter med school/graduate programs from many schools).

Fordham isn’t comparable to her other schools for life sciences. They are breaking ground on a science center, but its unclear when that will be up and running.

Good school for humanities, accounting, business, but they are years behind others when it comes to study bio, neurology etc.

Its also $90k+ per year, and as far as we can tell, not known for giving out merit. We are learning that Fordham is the only school on her list that requires the CSS profile to give out non-need merit scholarships. I wish I knew why…..

So yes, UW-Madison would trump Fordham if she gets in!

I don’t know a lot about Fordam - the info you provided is interesting!

I can’t answer that (and don’t think anyone can), especially for RD when some proportion of the class has already been offered a spot thru EA. Is your D applying to College of Letters & science or College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (there is a bio major in each)?

Note that Wisconsin does not have a neuroscience major. It is called neurobiology and is in CLS. She should not make the mistake of calling it neuroscience in her essays.

Not sure why she even applied to Fordham then. Regardless, I expect Fordham wants to see financial info so they limit giving merit aid to affluent families. Their money, their rules. Make sure you and your D are following all the deadlines and policies for FA at the other schools.

Would she choose Wisconsin over acceptances to Loyola Maryland (with significant merit) and Penn State?
