decluttering--sorting through detritus

Like the guy’s own TV room. :)

Today I tossed out 6 beat up cutting boards. My goodness I didn’t realize there were that many shoved into my cupboard and since I only use the same 2 or 3…I feel liberated!

Not to digress, but my Barbie was given to a friend’s daughter because my mom didn’t think I played with the doll anymore. I was heartbroken. My Barbie had wigs and believe me, I thought I was pretty cool to own something so special. Usually, my best friend Susan, always had nicer things than me - canopy bed, a case for her fire baton, cool dance costumes, a free-standing elaborate wooden playhouse with shutters and a door - but I had the Barbie with wigs. Sigh…

Okay - so VHS tapes are still winners. Any thoughts about old cassettes? It’s embarrassing how many we have, but at least they’re not 8-tracks.

We have those too, and we play them in the car.

We’re having three bathrooms painted, starting Monday March 7, so this weekend (and the next one, if necessary) I’ll be cleaning out the bathrooms. Even though the painters aren’t going to go into drawers, etc., I’m still going to go through everything and toss things like expired Tylenol. I don’t think it will take me that long – two of the bathrooms don’t have that much storage space anyway – so maybe I can tackle something else when I’m done with the bathrooms.

Or maybe I’ll just sit back, put my feet up, and feel good!

I donate the commercial VHS tapes (although I am keeping some of the old classic Disney ones). But the blank ones that we used to tape old movies off the TV – those went in the trash.

Threw out a big shoebox of duplicate photos last night.

VH - which painter did you choose???

I am trying to tackle photos. I am managed to put them in photo boxes by year (or as best as I can tell), but have not yet tackled the duplicates. I also know if I sort through all the pictures that maybe 1/3 to 1/2 are good enough to put into an album, but I cannot get myself to toss the “rejects”

Today’s project is coffee cups and those silver insulated mugs that have been multiplying behind closed doors.

6 bags of clothing and 7 boxes of household goods picked up from my front porch this morning. Feels good. :)

Costco had a fancy snapware storage container set on coupon, so I bought it, and told DH that we could toss all the other plastic storage containers that have been divorced from their lids. Now that’s a satisfying feeling!

Cleaned out my pantry yesterday. Threw out all the expired items and all the chips, cereals etc that had 1/4 left in them that H and the kids put back in. Organized so now I know what I have.

I am going through kitchen miscellany drawers and cabinets, and deciding that if I have never made homemade cannoli that I am not likely to need the filler tubes for them. And I definitely don’t need a second bundt pan. But this is a daunting task. I keep finding things and thinking, hmmm… wouldn’t it be nice if I made X again. I’m getting hungry just sorting through the drawers.

Mom60 – That’s a good idea – we always end up with boxes of cereal that nobody likes, so it might as well get tossed, and lots of partial boxes of pasta – we need about 2/3 of a box for dinner for the family, so it feels like I’m always opening a new box. Time to consolidate.

I am in an awkward stage with regard to kitchen stuff. I’d love to get rid of the extra plates, pots and pans, silver, glasses–stuff that is part of a set and some are broken, that kind of thing—but both kids are about to be on their own and it seems silly to give stuff away that they’ll need to buy in six months or a year.

Good point dmd77 - But…just when I was getting used to the idea of tossing/donating, now I have to think about future apartment kitchen and bath needs for my kids!

dmd- it seems to me you could pack a box of apartment stuff and give yourself until the fall before donating that.

Somemom and Kajon: I have put all the “might be useful to the kids” stuff in a few boxes in the basement, and there they sit. Not cluttering up my kitchen, just my storage room

But… I’ve been in a “divestment phase” for several years now, and even having boxes of stuff I don’t want in the storage room is taking up mental space. Since getting a Kindle, I’m even starting to look at my books differently. Could I, for example, get rid of the Jane Austen paperbacks? Well, yes, I could. She’s free on the Kindle. Poodles in America? I don’t think that will ever come to the Kindle… oh well, gotta keep that.

wnp, we chose the cheaper painter. The other guy wouldn’t come down. The cheap guy has been around for 35 years so his work must be decent. They start on Monday, March 7.

Am in the same boat wrt kids getting apartments. I told DH that the kids can have the old stuff so they will be motivated to work hard and earn enough $$ to replace it, just like we did. WE will enjoy new stuff!

Every time I talk about getting rid of something, he groans about “do we have to replace everything around here?” – i.e., he hasn’t gotten rid of me, and/or am I going to replace him with a younger model? :)

We had a small victory on declutter at our house today, so I thought I’d revive this thread.

My employer is sponsoring an Earth Day collection of old computers etc. It was just the push we needed for sorting through some boxes in the basement. We have a box of misc stuff for the collection, and the remaining stuff is more consolidated. (Darn - didn’t find an ethernet cable to replace the one with broken tab).

We’ll also send send off the unused “jammer” printer. It turns out that the power cord fits the the printer that came home from college without one. Yay! The new keyboard with old connector went in the give-away box, on the slim chance that somebody could actually use it. The box of diskettes will need to wait until we get another day of motivation.

Best wishes for others to find some Earth Day events as excuse to declutter . It really does feel good to get rid of some stuff the clutter, even if it makes only a small dent.
