Decoding "preppy"

What a trip down memory lane - Oldfort we could be soul mates on a timeline. I arrived on my campus in plaid pants, a white Izod shirt, a headband and topsiders…only to discover that 99% of the campus were dressed like hippies no matter what state of the union they came from. The girls all dressed like Janis Joplin with bracelets up to the elbows. Gourmetmom…i still wear fair isle sweaters with a turtleneck under them in the winter…sad to say. Back then the turtlenecks were cool if they had Vail or Aspen embroidered on the neck. Now, no resort labels ever.

Uh oh…now VV is passe…

Actually, I think VV appeals mostly to the high school and early college set nowadays. Like most trendy brands, it will probably make its way down to the pre-teens, and then it is done for…

@bookworm Woah. Hold up. There’s no way VV is at a Steinmart, perhaps it was just a knockoff? I’ve never seen VV anywhere but a VV store or outlet. I don’t think they have any other suppliers.

@Gourmetmom I bet your son was adorable in his madras jacket. I wish I could get my little brother to wear one.

My 13yo nephew’s profile pic is of him in a vineyard vines sweater or sweatshirt. So there you go. It’s jumped the shark…

Sorry, I couldn’t resist.

I’m a little younger than some of you. Eagles Eye was big when I went to college. Also I was in Petoskey, Michigan and they had a Papagallo store. It was like a blast from the past!

Yeah…I think that ship has sailed already. All the little boys at my church wear VV, down to the toddlers. While I’m not always a fan of VV on college kids and adults, I must say it looks absolutely adorable on little boys. I’m dressing my little kids in VV.

I think VV actually has some great looking clothing for women - great colors and classic styling, but I cannot bring myself to wear it at my age, solely because I associate the brand with teenagers.

I agree- if you saw Vineyard Vine clothing at a discount store, it is a knock-off. Their retail model just doesn’t let that happen.

By the time I was starting college my crowd at home was into Lacoste. I showed up at college (large midwest public) with a Lacoste dress. Everyone else was in jeans and t-shirts. I figured it out quickly!

My LAC had Wed cocktail parties where we all had to go semi formal - guys in blue blazer and girls in sweater and skirt (no pants). A lot of guys wore wide wale pants and lacoste shirt/sweater to class. I wore clogs, sweater, plaid skirt to class. Not a lot of people wore jeans and t-shirts.

FWW - Lacoste makes a nice v-neck tee in lightweight cotton for women. Very flattering (shaped, fitted and not too long) and available in lots of colors. Lacoste sold in Europe is also very nice - my daughter bought a few great dresses in Italy last summer. Again, better quality fabrics and sewing, cuts are flattering and fitted.

I’ve never seen VV discounted, other than minimal seasonal sales at VV stores…doubt Steinmart sells it.

Southerncharm - what size is your brother? This is a boy’s 14 - worn once for a couple of hours. PM me your address and I’ll be delighted to send it to you. It is really adorable. And I love, love, love madras…

I remember cable knit sweaters and the tennis sweaters with the maroon and blue V neck http://croppedsweater.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/tennis-sweater.jpg

Stein Mart has Vineyard Vines shirts, sweaters, and 1/4 zips for great prices! I am a big VV fan these days. Rugby shirts were $40. There were some pants, too, but the only color I noticed was pink. The display is only in the men’s section and is not marked Vineyard Vines.

Found that on a facebook page

@Gourmetmom He’s size 14 too!! Would you really do that? That would be awesome…just in time for my graduation party and this informal wedding coming up ;)

Speaking of boys’ sizes, I remember buying Ralph Lauren oxford button downs in pastel colors in the boys’ section (size 14 I think) and wearing them myself since that was cheaper than buying in women’s!

Per the interwebz, VV is at Steinmart and Marshall’s. I have also seen Lilly Pulitzer at Marshall’s fwiw. And of course RL can be found at lots if discount places.

J.McLaughlin is now at Marshalls, too, speaking of preppy.

Last summer I went to a couple of weddings of families where they were uber prep background(3rd gen St; Paul’s, etc. Edgartown Yacht Club, blah blah) and was surprised at the way the 20 something boys were dressed. Jeans, sandals and these plaid shirts with the cuffs rolled up. I"m thinking it was a statement of “Ralph Lauren is for the newly invented prep crowd. We’re the real deal.”

We don’t see VV discounted in my neck of the woods…New England - perhaps because we have the actual stores nearby. The plaid shirt with basic pants or jeans is very big for college guys…along casual blutcher style shoes rather than boat shoes.

New prep store on Nantucket (there’s already a Vineyard Vines) is Jack Wills–British version of prep.

In case anyone’s spouse or son is craving pants with whales or sailboats–this is the place:
www.nantucketreds.com

@Bromfield2 Oooh, yes, Jack Wills, although I’ve bought a few things from them and wasn’t impressed with the quality. I think they’re kind of the Abercrombie & Fitch of England. They do seem closer to true prep than VV. I guess it’s the colors.

The pink and green and bright colors (Lilly Pulitzer, etc) seem more Southern prep than Northern prep to me. There’s a definite style difference. Many of the “preppy” blogs are Southern in style.
