Some believe the athletic recruiting process gives too much power to coaches/schools, and that the athlete should do what’s best for themselves. (One of my son’s coaches strongly felt this way). (I am neutral!).
If your son gets an offer of full support with admissions from his dream school, then I think he should decommit. But, get the offer, pass the preread if there is one, before decommitting.
