Decorators, is Drapeless Windows - a new thing?

@Nrdsb4, you are “in.”

“shoes being discussed with joy on the shoe thread).”

There’s a shoe thread? Off to look.

So BB, you probably wouldn’t care for these:

Right after college, my roommate and I allowed a friend we’d known since grade school to sleep on our couch after a night of drinking a few. Apparently our cat kept racing up and down the drapes in a fury. Our friend had never been around a cat in his life, and he said it gave him nightmares for awhile, lol.

Nrdbs, I’m finishing my lunch and I almost choked on the food laughing at the photos and your cat story! My mom loved drapes. My sister and I adopted a stray cat. Cat v drapes - the cat won, four paws down. The end (of fancy drapes). Mom got used to living with the fact that the drapes were the cat’s favorite jungle gym.

The pirouttes are similar in function, but the design is different. Those are sort of 3 dimensional, whereas these are a continuous, 2 sided roller. I looked at the silouettes, but (a) I didnt like them and (b) they were RIDICULOUSLY expensive (hence, good thing I didnt like them)

^^^Hmm, for some reason, I created 3 dimensional in my mind when I looked at the pics.

Hmmm, I bought my house from someone who worked for Penny’s, probably in the drapery department. Windows DONE! Not quite as fussy a Nrdsb4’s examples, but close. I left the valences, removed all the paper stuffed inside, and all the panels. In 2 rooms, basically white/neutrals, which are still there. Unfortunately, the blinds are cheap.

Many years later, finally found a pretty silk fabric to use in my bedroom. The windows are a foot below ceiling, but my new valences are hung at ceiling level, and fall 2 feet plus. It makes the window and sliding glass door look so much better. I replaced the cheap vinyl mini blinds with faux wood blinds from Home Depot. My front windows are so pretty, I removed everything from them after I switched to hurricane glass. No one needs to walk thru living room naked.

On my last house, I put in Plantation shutters on windows downstairs, and Silhouettes upstairs. Those treatments probably helped sell the house.

Like Kit, I love walking thru fabric stores. I’ve recovered footstool, pillows etc. If it takes me 2 years to find a fabric I like, I don’t care.

^^^^I loved the Silhouettes after I saw them repeatedly on Love It or List It on HGTV. Hillary uses them often. We have plantation shutters on the front windows in our new house. We are in a zero lot line community and everyone has them, so we figured for uniformity and resale, we’d do that. Nothing to look at out the front, and we spend most of our time in the rooms which look out to the golf course.

Back in the day, I did all the swags and trim and stuff as that was what was what the model homes and decorators were doing. I have just evolved to a more streamlined look.

Nrdsb4-
Perhaps I misspoke- they are two shades (but one continuous loop) that pass by each other . Does that make sense?

The pirouettes were too “poofy”. For the family room and kitchen, they wanted almost $8K!! Um, NO

^^^^jym626, I’m terrible at spacial relationships, depth perception. They look so similar to me in the photos. I guess I’ll have to take a look at them at them in person to see the difference!

All my downstairs curtains are made from white striped (white on white) sheets, and are pulled back during the day. They hang on curtainrod using shower curtain hooks - the kind with the little beads. When they get dirty, I throw them in the washer. Cheap and easy to make. Upstairs, I have duvet cover curtains made from IKEA duvet covers- cheap and easy to make and wash. At night, i always pull them closed because otherwise the “cozy” and “warmth” just gets sucked out of the house… and I think it’s creeeeeeepy that someone might be able to see in. We have lots of privacy on our lot, but I just don’t like the thought that someone could be looking in without me knowing it.

btw- Lowes carries some good brands that often go on sale. Home Depot as well. Penneys used to have good sales then stopped- maybe again? We did put some panels in the dining room and living room- both informal- along with the shades for night. Eventually I may do valences.

^^^^If you are near a Penneys Outlet store they might have some drapes there. There was one in so cal before we moved (10 years+) and I bought quite a few. I stuck with more neutral and some “English country” patterns so they are still relevant today. Croscill, Laura Ashley (not the ones sold by Kohls), Royal Velvet (not the ones sold by target) and the Penneys brand made for them by Ralph Lauren…(there are only so many mills that make the fabric)were the brands I purchased from Penneys. Ross and sometimes Marshalls/TJ Maxx/Home Goods will sell the Nautica, Dockers and Croscill. I have found some nice ones at Big Lots and Ollies, but very hit or miss and you don’t buy the junk…it’s all mixed in, so you need to know what you are lookng for.

Big Lots did have some sold by penneys and some sold by Pier One. Have those up in one bedroom now, brown with flocked brown velvet, lined with white cotton and served us well this chilly winter keeping it cozy. Of course I have 10 panels up on 2 small windows but it does help anchor the room!
